For reasons which ought to be obvious, this Windows 3.11 update project is dead.

- Edit
progman.ini
to change which order the groups get tabbed to - You can copy any
.inf
file from an install disk into<WINDOWS>\SYSTEM
and rename it to oem?.inf, where ? is a number. It will append that .inf into its huge list. winfile.ini
dosapp.ini
tty.dat
-? deleted it.. perhaps from the win/system dir, same as the printer driver perhaps??- Change country code info
- Change keyboard speed
- Change colours
- Change background pattern/wallpaper
- Change sounds
- Run
winsetup.exe /Z
if you ever want a network, and have deleted that icon. -
To change name/company/serial number, edit
serialno.ini
>----- serialno.ini [Microsoft Products] mswindows=Microsoft Windows for Workgrou [mswindows] username= company= serialno= >----- serialno.ini
- To move
*.grp
, editprogman.ini
- it is futile to change capitalization, windows will redo it anyways... -
To move the
*.scr
, editsystem.ini
's [boot] and at the bottom, add:
SCRNSAVE.EXE=C:\WINDOWS\SCRNSAVE.SCR
However, you cannot change the screen saver type, or set it up through the regular channels any longer. That line must be edited. To change the options, copy it to the
- Adding
32bitfileaccess
ordiskaccess
doesn't necessarily work!!! - Don't have any tabs in this text!
-
Mention how to eradicate the swapfile. Edit the system.ini and ";" out those certain sections.
[386enh] EnableSharingPopups=TRUE TrapTimerPorts=OFF
timing sensitive apps ON for the modem!
Damn.. do this for win3.11b
again.. sigh:
- Be sure to delete the temp, recycled, cache, cookies, history etc.
- Remove all windows shared stuff from the dos partition.. stick that crap on it's own. All stuff which would need to be reinstalled in the event of a windows fuckup should be on it's own partition too.. the other stuff.. regular apps which don't require installation can be saved separately.
- Is there a list of the definitions of all of the
win.ini
/system.ini
commands? I know the usual stuff, and even some rare stuff, but a lot of it is well beyond me. -
Also, a better list/description for certain files/programs eg: Which files are used for/with:
- The task swapper
- The desktop
- What are certain fonts for? How would I change the definitions to change the defaults? (In order to safely delete some fonts, for example) I've got an idea, but there might be somebody out there with the concrete knowledge.
-
wina20.386
- A windows 3.1 file which should be in the root. Supposedly needed for 386 enhanced mode, however, windows still worked fine without it. Could that cause problems?
- Doesn't it come with DOS v6.22?
- I edited my
msdos.sys
, and that's what mentioned this file as being necessary for Windows' 32 bit mode.. odd. - Is it alright to
attrib +h
this file? Hrm.. it hard to know anything about this file seeing as I can't tell if it does anything when in the root.
-
win.ini
- In the Windows 3.1 win.ini, there is listed a
[Compatability]
section. I can guess what this is for, but why would this be different between people's Windows 3.1's? And wouldn't the install programs themselves set up that section??
- In the Windows 3.1 win.ini, there is listed a
