Aliens destroy the world, and survivors band together to fight back using power armour.
A fantastic game, the likes of which I have never seen.
Unfortunately, it was abandoned.

An actively-developed FPS. During my play, I saw a number of significant improvements. Not side-grades or contentious changes, outright direct improvements. It's clear Firefall's development team cares. I liken this to the passion of the Path of Exile - (2013 game) team.
It's free to play, and suspiciously so. I don't understand how the developers make any money off of this game. There's nothing in the game that really needs any money at all. There is a sort of "pay to win", but everything can be unlocked by elements of game play. I'm not sure what to say here.. I actually felt quite guilty about not being motivated in the least to give money.
There are variations on "talent points", some of which are interesting.. but there's no real choice because there are mandatory ones.
There is a staggering amount of abilities and modifiers.. and only a little bit of variety once one considers what ends up being mandatory.
The crafting is quite good, but it has random output for item types.. so it's a grind to do self-crafted gear. Crafting is a bit annoying, having to go to stations to queue actions up which take quite a long time to complete. Crafting components must be processed before they can be used for crafting, which is a bloody annoying requirement when it requires time.
There is an auction house.. which is semi-mandatory and horribly expensive.
There are dungeons and a queue system for them.. which are quite fun, especially with competent people and more so with people you know. However, it's not that they get tiring, and they do, but that they don't become important or interesting at end-game.
There are raids and a queue system for them.. which are all manner of fun.
There is grinding, in the form of running raids.
There isn't enough of an end-game for many players. I disagree, and think it's quite interesting.
There doesn't seem to be enough of a push for guilds, or maybe I didn't try to get into a guild. Maybe this is why I don't view end-game as positively as I might.
Whenever a game introduces a mechanic or power, they seem to be compelled to ram its use down the throats of its players. In this case, Firefall has an excellent jump-boost-hover ability. However, there are obtrusively-placed mountains EVERYWHERE, many of which shield important locations.
There are mini "events" all over the place. Various kinds appear on the world map in a number of set locations. They can even overlap. Some of these are extremely hard or impossible to solo, requiring an ad-hoc group of sorts. Other players in the area may opt to get over to that point to share in the glory and rewards. This adds quite a lot of semi-replayability to the game. Nothing of value drops, as such, but materials do.
There is a daily conversion between the everyday dropped currency and another kind of currency used to trade on the auction house.
There is a reward for staying logged in, which is the strangest thing ever. A treasure chest for being logged in for a certain length of time or returning over a certain number of days.
The currency conversion and the treasure chest thing creates the mandatory daily login annoyance that too many games have.

Generally great game. Has some awkward UI bits, but is in active development.
My biggest complaint is that everything in the game can be earned in the game. There is no push to spend money on it and fund its development.
While it does have nice graphics, if you expect the 20 player mass-mayhem endgame raiding (warfront) then you'll need to turn them down. There is no easy way to do this, perhaps an addon will come along.
Addons are supported, although there aren't very many. They are mandatory for doing some fundamental things, like group finding or better hotkeys.

I'd split this up into topics and add captions, but with this many images it's just not worth it.
I included an easy newbie thumping location, for those among you with a keen eye.
This has been done in WordPress gallery-form because using BlogText doesn't seem to work in this case. A preview shows no images, perhaps because there are so many. See BlogText bugs.

For unknown reasons, Steam has allowed Firefall 1.7.1962 to be installed again. Only the launcher can be run, but it's still interesting.
With access to the files, I was able to peek in and rip some things out.
audited some links
Added EviltwO's Firefall web icons.
Really I should have a separate file server or some such, but.. whatever.
