For extremely cheap telephone service using VoIP, I have this device. Instead of having my computer on all the time, I have this box hooked up to my network. I then have a regular telephone plugged into it. Once configured, everything is magic.

I think I purchased mine from CanadaComputers - Cisco SPA122 on canadacomputers.com

-
- Can be customized.
- I think it can be disabled so only a handset can be used.
-
- Includes password management.
- Has a default guest account which should probably be deleted.

VPN Passthrough:
- IPsec
- Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) (insecure!)
-
Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP)
Other services which I don't use:
- Virtual LAN (VLAN)
- Cache Discovery Protocol (CDP)

The SPA122 is really overpowered for my needs. It's so very configurable that it's terribly confusing. Boy did it take me a lot of time to figure out how to get things working.. but once I did, it boiled down to these simple instructions..
