While Replacing Firefox, I wanted to look into a solution for abstracting out advertisement blocking.
I failed.
- Polipo makes downloading from file-hosting sites hang up regularly, starting at 15MB. May be a mis-configuration.
-
I have Firefox set up to let me type single words into the location bar to trigger its search feature. Polipo breaks this, trying to go to
http://keyword
Multiple keywords work, so this is rather strange.

TODO: I'm unhappy with the idea of adzapper and I'd rather remove it to simplify things and instead use a large polipo /etc/polipo/forbidden
list. Then I could use some external scripting to occasionally update that list.
2013-05-22 - polipo 1.0.4.1-1.2 and adzapper 20090301.dfsg.1-0.2 ∞
I got both of these version numbers from synaptic, I don't know how to ask the programs themselves.
\sudo \apt-get install \ polipo \ adzapper \ ` # ` \sudo /etc/init.d/polipo restart
- redirector = /usr/bin/adzapper
- I did this in the configuration window.

FIXME: automate that..
Notes: Ancient configuration in Firefox says to not use a proxy for: groups.google.com, linuxquestions.org, www.flickr.com

Midori configuration for the polipo proxy ∞
Tested 2013-05-22 on Lubuntu 13.04, using Midori 0.4.3.
- Edit > Preferences (or alt-ctrl-p)
-
Network >
- Proxy Server: HTTP proxy server
- Hostname: localhost
- Port: 8123
- Web Cache: 0
Since polipo uses its own disk cache, why have the browser use its as well?

-
Using tor with Polipo (Tor, Polipo) - Set
socksParentProxy
tolocalhost:9050
