An all-in-one internet application suite.
-
Evolved from the original Mozilla project Netscape Navigator.
Firefox is fundamentally broken, having been infiltrated by bureaucracy, feature creep and whatever other shenanigans. While I checked out SeaMonkey as an alternative, I ended up with Pale Moon.
version 2.26 ∞
about:data is pretty cool.
- Tested 2014-05-24 on Lubuntu 14.04, updated recently.
- User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:29.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/29.0 SeaMonkey/2.26
-
Build identifier: 20140428215857
Improvements ∞
-
Fuckloads faster, perhaps because of my choice of addons, so more testing is being done.
- I'm going to do some experimentation with a fresh Firefox profile to see if perhaps an old profile is to blame.
-
Has a profile manager built-in: Tools > Switch Profile
Downsides ∞
- Cannot alt-number to change tabs
- Many addons don't work with it, although I've had good luck finding community updates.
- The search functionality is at the top instead of the bottom, where I'm used to.
- The search functionality doesn't have a straightforward way to know if I don't find any matches on the page. What the fuck, Mozilla?
-
Cannot assign hotkeys to open the individual sidebar items, like Boomkarks and History.
- Keyconfig doesn't provide options. Perhaps there is a more advanced way to use keyconfig to solve this issue, but I have not looked into it.
- There is no bookmarking popup to prevent duplicate bookmarks.
-
There is no visual feedback that a bookmark was made.
- I can see the speed advantage in this.
Things to adjust ∞
I don't know if I might have toggled some things before building this list. I also have some addons installed and semi-configured, some of which probably adjusted traditionally-accessible settings.
-
I can't use shortcuts for Tools > Options, of the Popup Manager.
- The Menu Edit addon isn't compatible and needs updating.
To get to the preferences, do Tools > Options

- WONTFIX by Asa Dotzler [:asa] 2013-04-11 16:26:51 PDT -- "This sidebar is probably going away. Certainly not moving to the right side."
- WHAT?!
-
xsidebar might have been able to move the sidebar to the right, but it doesn't as of SeaMonkey 2.26.
failed attempt one
/* Place the sidebar on the right edge of the window */ window > hbox { direction:rtl; } window > hbox > * { direction:ltr; }
failed attempt two
/* Place the sidebar on the right edge of the window */ hbox#browser { direction: rtl; } hbox#browser > vbox { direction: ltr; }
Scrapbook ∞
- Scrapbook
- http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=407965
- This appears to be Scrapbook, not Scrapbook Plus
- Highlighting doesn't do anything.
-
On Linux, text entered into in-page note boxes are not saved.
- This isn't surprising, as the original broke it some time ago.
Add Tools > Options, just like on Windows ∞
-
- Works unmodified on SeaMonkey. Just select "install anyway" on that web page.
Unclutter and rearrange items on the status bar. ∞
keyconfig - Configure shortcuts ∞

I had to adjust many items.
The JavaScript console gives me:
Timestamp: 14-05-24 09:23:27 AM Error: TypeError: props is undefined Source File: chrome://keyconfig/content/keyconfig.js Line: 420
also line 422
[disabled] Linky ∞
-
Its right-click Linky hotkey interferes with Copy Link Location.
[not compatible] Menu Editor ∞
- http://menueditor.mozdev.org/ [ 1 ]
- Menu Editor [ 2 ]
- menuedit-1.2.3.3-mod.xpi is not compatible with SeaMonkey 2.26.
-
I tried about:config
extensions.checkCompatibility.2.26;false
- This did work to get it installed. I can interact with the addon, but its functionality does not seem to work. I attempted to hide the items at the top of Tools (Search the Web through to Popup Manager) and they remain.
Also, the page
Menu Editor [ 3 ]
Has a link to
https://web.archive.org/web/20121109162755/http://www.mozdev.org:80/mailman/listinfo/xsidebar
.. but that mailing list does not exist.
move the sidebar to the right ∞
chrome/userChrome.css
/* Move the sidebar to the right */ #browser { direction: rtl; } hbox#browser > vbox { direction: ltr; }.
This does not work.
