Abandoned
- As of 2021-03-21 the last release was 2017-08-28, it is listed as dormant on distrowatch and the forum is gone.
- 2019-02-22 — I checked this out again, and the website’s download page suggests 7.1, yet I can find 7.2 in the mirrors. This is an intolerable fail. Also, this distro appears dormant when it has no release in a very long while.
-
2018-07-08 — I see that 7.2 has been out for a while. I took a glance, and this doesn’t have enough activity for me to be interested. I’m also appalled at its terrible forum font.
2015-10-08 – 7.1 notes ∞
I’m told that dd will work to prep the install usb stick.
\dd bs=8M if=VL-7.1-LIGHT.iso of=/dev/sdX
-
There’s an automatic install, but it uses
ext3
(source)
EXT3 was chosen for the automatic install as it is considered a safe and conservative choice.
-
use gslapt
7.1 bare-bones ∞
The release announcement claims there’s a “bare-bones X Window with just TWM”, but I’ve been unable to find it.
The release thread has a user’s advice on this.
(source)
Unchecking “IceWM with VL modifications and customizations” blocks the installation of icewm and the supporting programs which create the “Light” environment, as well as most productivity applications. It will leave you with a very basic system that only has TWM for a window manager.
2015-05-15 – 7.0 Light ∞
Conclusion – This distro’s last release was 2012-04-09. Its news is just as old, so this distro is dormant. I wasn’t able to get it onto a USB stick to try it.
- Trying with UNetbootin/Windows
-
Detects it but does not give me a bootloader, only a commandline. Pressing enter gave me:
Could not find kernel image: kernel/sata
I’m not going to troubleshoot.
2015-05-12 – 7.0 Light ∞
- Trying the USB copy with Universal USB Installer (UUI) 1.9.6.0
- Using
VL7.0-LIGHT.iso -
Doesn’t boot into it. Sigh.
2015-05-08 – 7.0 Light ∞
Oh gods, thanks for calling it “Light” and not “Lite”.
From what I can see, it has a bloated liveCD but only an installer for its Light Edition.
Its documentation was buried under “Community”. Huh?
I found no documentation for its latest version, 7.0 .
I’ve no idea how to get the ISO onto a USB stick. Even its old documentation doesn’t hint at it. I’m trying:
sudo dd if=VL7.0-LIGHT.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=4M
This didn’t work.
https://sourceforge.net/projects/multibootusb/ failed, probably because I didn’t fuck with syslinux stuff. It’s awkward to use..

Ya know what. Fuck this distro. With no installation docs and easy way to getting this shit onto a USB stick, why bother?
I tried LiLi but it didn’t work. I submitted the distro to them, but I noticed it was released 2012-04-09! Disqualified.
2009-04-15 – 6.0-light ∞
- Lets me use
/dev/sda1as root, good. - Talks about requiring a swap, but I’m not using one.
- Doesn’t detect my network card. FAIL
-
Booted into it, it gave me the congratulations screen and froze. FAIL.

Bummer, you just missed the release of the new version, 7.1
It is USB drive friendly if you use dd to write it.
Lately, most of the work has gone in to the back end of the distro. Next version should be produced much quicker.
Both Standard and Light are “install only”, a good way to test them is in a virtual machine.
Thanks a lot for updating me. I’ll definitely check this out.
It’s unfortunate it’s install-only, but Slackware and its derivatives have such a glowing history that I’m sure a full install will do just fine.
I set aside another partition for such experimentation. (also, I do backups)
