Stripping things down and starting somewhat fresh. Things are pretty stable here, but the instructions are lacking.

NOTE: I have two characters which I frequent:

  • Gnome, Warlock, Engineering, Jewelcrafting

  • Draenei, Shaman, Skinning (375), Leatherworking

So this list will be maintained according to those needs. Make suggestions if you wish, but I cannot keep any other combination of race-class-profession up-to-date since I can't really properly continuously-test those other AddOns.

It's time to start a new revision and wipe things clean and start over and including configuration instructions.

Chatter ∞

All the bugs are being ironed out and I'm still choosing better variations of some AddOns.

This page is still pretty ugly. I'm still working out some way to tidy it up.

Brand new installations ∞

First, confirm that your server is running. Start up WoW and log in. If you are having any issues with WoW, stop and solve them before you proceed.

1) Exit the game

2) Move these three folders

C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Interface
C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\WTF
C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Cache

  1. Make a 'backups' folder somewhere
  2. Make a new folder within it with today's date (like 2008-01-15)

  3. Move those three folders inside

3) Launch the game

4) Log in

Note: If the server is down you won't be able to proceed.

Confirm that you see the introduction movie.

BLOCKED

It doesn't show the intro movie!

5) Exit the game

Confirm that the Interface, WTF and Cache folders have been re-created.

Updating ∞

Ace AddOns
  1. Run the WowAceUpdater

  2. press F10. Give it some time and it'll refresh itself. It won't tell you when it's done. When it says 'Ready...' at the bottom, then you can exit it.

Cosmos AddOns
  1. Run the Cosmos patcher
  2. click 'Patch Cosmos'. Wait for a long long time. When it's done a popup will appear which displays the list of AddOns which can be updated.

  3. Click 'Continue Update'. Wait for a long long time, again. When that's done, click 'Exit'.

Ventrilo is often used for voice chat, which is unfortunate since it doesn't tell you who is speaking while in the game.

Multiple Combined Addons

Unit Frames Replacement:

Cosmos has a nice UnitFrames replacement, and check out Archaeologist for all kinds of good features. Currently bugged for XP display but that's minor. Also has PartyCastingBars to see what your party is casting.

  • Issues with my pet's debuffs appearing twice. Probably a configuration thing. (I haven't re-tested this in some time since I haven't been playing my Warlock)

Cooldown Timer:

{{Ace}} Quartz is nice for cooldown bars. I'm using it now. It uses the cooldown timer from whatever flight helper to display a flight cooldown.

  • You have to set some kind of global cooldown spell. I never did figure out what the heck that should be..

Does automatic trinket-cycling, but it doesn't seem to work the way I expect since unequipping some trinkets on cooldown will disable their power. Even understands when the bank is open and will withdraw/deposit intelligently. Spec-fucking-tacular. Can even auto-equip based on certain actions like skinning or fishing.

    • configuration: Set up a few suits. Enable hotkeys for them. Then go into your hotkey manager (in Khaos Configure) and assign keys. I reassigned control-1 through 0 for suits 1-10 so I can manually swap suits with hotkeys. When using hotkeys it does say what you're swapping to. Then go check out the main Outfitter topic for more details and some scripts I use.

  • {{Ace}} QuestAnnouncer /qa -- Informs your other party members of your quest status. Seems very nice. I'm not sure how to remove the minimap icon. =(

Known bugs with the AddOns I use ∞

Issue with my scripting for Outfitter not working with my riding trinket because of the auto-trinket stuff. Argh.

experience-related: attempt to concatenate field 'prefix' (a nil value) ∞

As of 2007-11-30 the error is silently trapped but XP doesn't change, so this hasn't been fixed. =(

This should be fixed by WoW 2.3.2 [http://www.cosmosui.org/showthread.php?postid=65590]

symptoms:

  • hovering the mouse over the experience/reputation bars gives an error
  • the XP/reputation value will never change

  • gives an error after every fight

The error is:

Error: attempt to concatenate field 'prefix' (a nil value)
File: Interface\FrameXML\TextStatusBar.lua
Line: 64
Count: 1

Workaround: disable this feature in the Archaeologist AddOn:

  1. escape, and visit Khaos Configure
  2. Under Frames, choose Archaeologist
  3. Scroll down this stupid-huge list of options. Find "Experience & Reputation Bars"

  4. Remove all checkboxes from this section.

I'd need to get a replacement for this Cosmos component, which I should probably do anyways..

In the end, I just removed the entire XP bar and play without it. On mouseover I have a vague guess at things.. I learn how many kills of a mob I'd need to level. =)

  • automatically abandon quests you fail

    • and report it in the chat window..

  • when you abandon a quest, it says it in the chat log.

  • look for an addon that watches someone else's mana or the MTs health so I know when I should start healing.

  • party quests isn't working quite right..

  • CombatDND -- I wish I could squelch the text this spits out. =(

  • Add back the mouseover delay when hovering over stuff.

  • NotesUNeed could replace SocialNotes.

    • Or it would, if I could figure out how to properly maintain quest notes. Check/ask for help.

lag, hang, disconnect, broken AddOns on reconnect ∞

During a raid:

  • lag, then
  • the game UI hangs
  • I get a lot of disk activity

  • I get disconnected

Reconnecting will take an exceptionally long time (WONDERFUL during a raid).

And Chaman2's totem bars will be semi-visible and mostly broken. Other AddOns might not work, but I didn't notice.

Quitting WoW and restarting resolves this.

Possible culprits:

  • Ventrilo
  • Auto Combat Log or combat logging in general.

  • Raiding itself, or Kara itself.

    • Raiding seems doubtful. I've been in a larger raid group before which wasn't very active. I've been in a Zul'Farrak raid which was fairly active.

    • Kara seems possible. I have only experienced this in Kara.

But my recent raiding was the only time I've used Ventrilo and I did do some AddOn changes so who knows.

Also, others in my party had experienced disconnections. So I'm leaning towards blaming combat logging or WoW itself.

invisible mobs ∞

This seems to be a game issue. Mobs will stay where they are and won't animate. Engaging them is a bad idea because they will move to your location in reality but not visibly. Skinning might break. You have to physically be at the invisible body but interact with the fixed visible one. It sucks.

Restarting solves this.

I think it's a game issue because it happened to me and then another player I was grouped with. We don't use the same AddOns, although he did use some so perhaps we were using the same bugged AddOn?

(old) occasional hanging ∞

Whenever I get near an aggro mob, even if it doesn't aggro against me, or when I enter into combat, there is a nasty lag on the interface. It's so bad that it'll 'stick' to my mouse, as though I had been holding and dragging the right mouse button.

So this means I have to disable a bunch of addons to figure out what's going on.

I think maybe this problem happens when I simply *select* something new..

  • not Avion (ace)s
  • not DamageMeters (cosmos)

  • .. maybe some kind of combat statistics thing?

What I did to solve this was to go through ALL of my AddOns and manually disabled anything I didn't like the look of. Something was acting up alright..

chaman's tooltips are wrong ∞

Hovering the mouse overtop of the multitude of totem icons will sometimes display the wrong things.

No worries.. restart the game to fix it. Usually.

While playing, nothing appears overtop characters/mobs (names, HPs, ? or !) ∞

I don't know what triggers this, but I think it's some misbehaving AddOn which I've had for a long time now.

If/when this happens, restart the game. You may have to use 'v' (or is it control-v?) to reset things properly again.

Frequent error messages ∞

A possible solution:

Log into the game - hit Esc - hit Interface - under the Display section, uncheck the "Display Lua errors" box.

This doesn't seem to work. You might have to resort to disabling the offending AddOn, or disabling some of its features, if you can guess what AddOn is causing the trouble.

A workaround:

Use [http://wowacereview.wordpress.com/addons/misc/bugsack/ BugSack] to trap and hide errors. Remember to configure this addon to stfu with that stupid sound it plays.

Remember that this just hides your errors so .. your addons might explode or do other truly awful things.

(old) Multi-casting makes lighting bolts disappear ∞

My visual glitch with the Shaman:

  1. At maximum instant spell range (20 yards)
  2. Send a lightning bolt, and as soon as possible,

  3. press 't' to begin combat, and immediately send an instant spell

It would have to be reproduced again, all addons nuked and then re-tested. Ugh.

I may never be able to reproduce this since I'm using new spells and such.
