The king of video players.
On Windows, this is especially-king because the user doesn't have to figure out and download various shady codecs.
- Properly titled VLC media player.
- Alternative, on Windows 10, for audio: Audacious
- VLC alternate audio track from a separate file
-
Can play various Oldschool music formats.

or get back to it without doing awindows-tab
, there are no options, and it's ugly as fuck; uninstalled.

2023-05-01 - 3.0.18 ∞
Multiple instances spawn ∞
When using explorer.exe
and opening a video, VLC plays the video. If I open another video with explorer, it opens another instance of VLC. This occurs if I have either, or both, of the settings "Allow only one instance" or instance or window via "Use only one instance when started from file manager" enabled.
Maybe it's ExplorerPatcher, but I doubt it.
This makes me not want to use VLC. I'll try an alternative
2020-08-07 - 3.2.12 - 554be13c6 ∞
-
Nice clean interface.
Lacking functionality:
- View a song's filename.
- Move a song to the top or bottom of its playlist.
-
Delete a file from disk.

I see no way to download a 64bit program.
2016-06-01 - (untested) ∞
While I could have installed it on Slackware 14.1 using slpkg with:
\slpkg -s sbo vlc
.. it's list of dependencies is horrific. I'll try to make due without.
I tried installing this anyway, and it took more than 1 GB of space before bringing my computer down.
2016-04-15 - 2.2.1 64bit ∞
Installed from their official installer.
Works just fine.

Their online documentation was removed. They won't even keep their old stuff online.

2009-07-16 - Looping a video in VLC: View > Playlist > "loop button"
- Why wouldn't that be a preference? Who knows..
vlc --help
has unreadable blue text. Bastards.- single-instance has not been made default. I must use --one-instance
- I don't know how to pull up the preferences. The button doesn't do anything.
- I don't think it can play Commodore SIDs =(
-
Volume settings are not saved between sessions.
2007-06-16 - 0.8.6b (wxWidgets interface) ∞
-
Open new file in same instance of VLC
- Holy crap, it STILL doesn't have a feature to let you only keep one instance! That's just pathetic. I guess nobody has used this software until just now.
- The playlist is too detached from the main window. I miss having a hotkey to summon or remove it like with XMMS. =/
-
The playlist selection+deletion feature is busted and inconsistent.
Ancient notes ∞
- Unfortunately, it will not play all videos. I haven't confirmed why, but I've noticed that some broken videos play much better with MPlayer.
-
It's advanced settings are horrifyingly advanced.
Usage ∞
Show filenames in playlist ∞
Preferences > (o) Advanced > Input / Codecs > (Advanced) > Change title according to current media $F
Then restart
This will not work with things like a .cue
file, which supplies the metadata to be used.
Subtitle delay ∞
https://wiki.videolan.org/Adjust_Subtitle_Delay/
3.0.5 - Using g
and h
to adjust subtitle delay doesn't actually work past a given amount.
You can use Tools > Track Synchronization
.. but the best way to adjust subtitles is to note the initial point of one of the audio or the subtitles, and press the corresponding hotkey, then wait for the other and press that corresponding hotkey, then applying the sync.
--
If the subtitles appear first, and the matching voice appears later, then:
- Wait for the subtitle to first appear.
- Press
shift-j
- Wait for the voice to begin.
- Press
shift-h
-
Press
shift-k
--
If the reverse is true, where the subtitles appear too late, then do the reverse:
- Wait for the voice to begin.
- Press
shift-h
- Wait for the subtitle to first appear.
- Press
shift-j
-
Press
shift-k
Recording a stream ∞
2019-06-07 or earlier. I don't remember anything about this note.
vlc -I dummy --run-time=60 http://x.x.x.x/anony/mjpg.cgi --sout="#transcode{vcodec=mp2v}:std{access=file{append},dst=x.x.x.x.mpg}" vlc://quit
A/B repeat ∞
Yes, I had to fucking search for this.
View > Advanced Controls
A/B export ∞
Fucked if I know how. Is it even possible? I don't want to use a video editor.
- exporting frames, i.e. a series of images
[impossible] - VLC snapshot timestamp ∞
-
It's not possible to make a screenshot like
filename--hh-mm-ss-frame.png
wherehh-mm-ss
is the positioning in the video, andframe
is the frame counter within the file. These fuckwits have no idea what they're doing.- I also don't care if it overwrites an existing screenshot. Why would I care to increment a screenshot of the exact same frame? Well whatever, that could be made an option in case crazy people want an easy way to take multiple screenshots with multiple video settings.
- I also want it to make a subdirectory and put the screenshots therein.
-
https://wiki.videolan.org/Documentation:Play_HowTo/Format_String
Settings > Video
Video Snapshots:

.
- Prefix:
-
[_] Sequential Numbering
I actually want the filename, not the title, but I see no way to do that.
-
Prefix:
$N--$T_$f_
$N--$h
?
Fuck, this thing is insane.
Audio stuttering under VirtualBox ∞
I had audio stuttering problems within VirtualBox, but only with certain audio formats! The solution:
Preferences > Audio
- Output module: [ALSA audio output]
-
Device: [HDA Intel, STACC9221 A1 Analog Default Audio Device]
Hardcode subtitles ∞
- With the completed
<video>.eng.srt
file, launch VLC. control-r
[Add]
- Navigate to, and select, the
<video>.ext
file. - [x] Use a subtitle file
- Navigate to, and select, the
<video>.eng.srt
file. [Convert/save]
- Profile
[Youtube--mine]
- Destination file
[Browse]
and give it a new name. Perhaps<video>--hardcoded.ext
-
[Start]
[unsolved] VLC magenta / pink video ∞
It's not a hardware acceleration or video device / method output problem. The video has some sort of fucked up-ness to it. Get something else.
Remove/crop black borders ∞
Pressing c
cycles through options.
There doesn't appear to be anything intelligent/automatic which detects blackness and crops.

Mplayer-Classic (windows)

I finally learned how to properly manually sync without needing to constantly fiddle. I've always been confused about the concept of delay, and it never did seem to properly kick in.
After spending too much fucking time on trying to make VLC take sane snapshots, I conclude that IT IS NOT FUCKING POSSIBLE. These morons, these fucking morons, still haven't implemented it.
ported
Founded a couple of old notes reaching as far back as 2007.
God did it suck back then.
Moved notes into their own sections.
I figured out how to list filenames in the playlist.
added instructions for hardcoding subtitles
updating from 3.0.5 to 3.0.14
Holy shit there really aren't any alternatives for Windows..
