Survivors of a plague that wipes out most humans make a desperate bid to undo it all by sending a man back in time.
I suppose it's inevitable that a television series based around time travel will get convoluted really quickly because they stretch things out. Still, this doesn't feel very good to me.
Maybe writing for a time travel series inevitably goes "bad", but even early on this didn't feel very good to me. The acting seems fine but not spectacular. Everything else is without flaw, from set to wardrobe and the like.
I think that everything in television has progressed so well that all that's left are the extremely difficult "soft" things: Acting and writing.
Perhaps I also dislike this because it is variously called a science fiction mystery or adventure drama mystery.
They really hammered home the love interest bullshit really early. I found this jarring as all hell. It felt incredibly obvious and forced. I really want to respond to this with comments like "I guess there's a female writer" and "a decision maker must be a woman", but honestly I think it's important for a series to broaden (no pun intended) its audience.
Every series has a legitimate reason to cast a wide net to catch viewers, but science fiction-esque topics don't find enough traction these days. I honestly shouldn't beat up a show like this one, but I'm sick and tired of movies and television that cater to the interests of the common female.
It's rare for a drama to randomly insert action to appeal to men, but there are plenty of "chick flicks" that are a total turn off when I'm in not feeling girly. On the other hand, EVERYTHING has to have a fucking relationship in it. A relationship HAS to be the primary motivation of a male. Pathetic.
Don't get me wrong, I love me the occasional tear jerker, but there are days when I feel like I'm drowning from being bathed in these tropes.
I'm probably having a bad day. I'm probably being too hard on this series. I know I'm not giving it much of a chance by only watching to the third episode, but if a show cannot very strongly establish itself in the first few shows then I find it will only go downhill from there.
I'm not against any of adventure, drama or mystery, and I love science fiction. Maybe the combination of these doesn't do it for me.
