It's an official project by Ubuntu to maintain something lighter.

I've been using Lubuntu more-or-less against my will for a long time now. I don't like Ubuntu. There's something dirty about it.

I was getting frustrated with Unity Linux (I can't update or my audio will break, fuck PulseAudio) and I wanted to experiment with a bunch of other Linux distributions. Every time I do something like this I get burned time and time again either by obvious bugs or random incompatibility.

The main drive was for the ruby mentoring project. A multimedia toolkit was selected which I couldn't get working under Unity Linux.
