Aliens are sending spores to colonize Earth, but when humans send a retaliatory force to their homeworld they learn the bugs are a far more dangerous foe than anticipated.

It's a largely flawless movie. Amazing fun for what it is, which is the sort of military movie where only one soldier runs out of ammo once in the entire movie.

The Neverending Story

A boy skips school, is assaulted by bullies then hides from them in a bookstore which he then robs, then hides out in his school's attic to read.

An extraordinarily powerful movie.

There's a certain feeling with movies in the 1980's which were positioned for children but had unashamedly-adult themes running through them. The Neverending Story has, at its core, themes of literacy, imagination, will, loss, hope and determination.

A man works to develop an artificial intelligence for a secret military robot soldier project.

With a dark, calm tone, this movie brushes up against all the right topics. It encourages strong empathy for artificial intelligence in a way rarely seen elsewhere, and I find it deeply moving. Very highly recommended.

Flight of the Navigator (1986) poster

A twelve year old kid is kidnapped by an alien research drone, who experiments on him by stuffing him full of knowledge, and although his brain ends up "leaking", he is the drone's only chance to get back home after hitting some power lines and getting shocked.

Though there aren't many kid-friendly science fiction movies out there, this is easily the best among them. Even ignoring its "present day" time, it's beginning to show its age. The fact that its "present day" is 1986 will inevitably be its biggest hurdle to accessibility to today's young. This movie is definitely worth a remake every fifteen years or less.

The Sum of Histories (2015) poster

A pair of scientists learn they can push electrons back in time and can send emails.

Calm, enthralling, and deeply moving. This movie does all the right things with science fiction and time travel. It keeps the core values of the characters, lets things make just enough sense to have the audience both engaged, confused and planning ahead, and has a romantic streak to it.

Highly recommended!

A young, broken, man, enters an underground community of computer crackers, trying desperately to prove himself but with consequences.

An extremely good movie. While not quite mandatory, it's definitely a proper advancement of the "hacker kid" movies that have sullied past movies. Highly recommended, even for people that "know their stuff", as it doesn't lay on the techno-babble which describes everything painfully wrong. Instead, it takes a reasonable middle ground, staying away from pop culture and fairly-firmly on the social side of storytelling.

Groundhog Day (1993) poster

An asshole anchorman is sent to a little town to do a fluff story on Groundhog Day, but karma bites him in the ass when the town gets snowed-in.

A fantastic movie not just for the usual things, but for the execution of its idea. Unlike so many movies that have its elements, this one stays grounded and accessible. This movie is well-loved and highly recommended.

A princess, being chased by orcs and to be a sacrifice, passes through a gate into our world but the orcs follow her.

If this movie could be considered a B-movie, it is extraordinary. It's well-written and well-acted, and unlike Orcs! (2011) there is no comedy and I have no feeling that there is need or room for any. I easily consider this a low-budget A-movie. It was good. Very good. Not surprisingly good, actually good.

I don't know how strongly I can or should recommend this. My heart melts for Aleya, so I'm pretty sure I'm biased.

  • aka Orc Wars
  • See also Orcs! (2011).
  • Contains no dragons or dragon fire, or all that much fire.
