Since there are so few pages/blogs on Awesome, my previous posts were ranked very high on Google. I am compelled to write a followup to my previous misadventures so people aren’t getting the wrong impressions of what may well become my new window manager of choice.
I still intend to do a proper window manager roundup[doesn’t exist], and I intend to re-review Awesome on what will likely be either a largely-vanilla core Unity Linux which is on its way to being transformed into an alpha Oldschool Linux, or TinyME.
By the way, TinyME has been a loose working target as a functional branch development environment, so core Unity Linux will be pretty close to it anyways. Mind you, TinyME may have unneeded bits which wouldn’t be included in core. Think printing or scanning.
Also, regarding the roundup. Just so people know – I do not consider the footprint to be the deciding factor for my using a window manager. For one, basic configuration/customization needs to be straightforward enough for me to actually want to use the thing. This isn’t just about theming either.
So, for example:
- Hotkeys really should be managed by an external program, but for non-Blackbox window managers, how easy is it for me to change the hotkeys? Do I have to look up scan codes? Is there a GUI tool?
- Do I have to restart the window manager or restart X to reload the configuration?
-
Is the window manager compliant with various standards like EWMH? Does the tray area work as-expected?
A window manager does its job when it gets the hell out of my way. The experience of using my computer should only be about using one particular application to perform one task at a time. Struggling with moving and resizing windows or constantly reaching for a mouse when a hotkey would be faster and easier are things that really piss me off.
Anyhow, this is longer than I wanted to be. To summarize – I get a lot of traffic hitting my Awesome window manager pages, and so an updated is in order so hopefully Google searches will send people to this new hopeful page instead of my bitching/whining pages. =)
2015-05-11 – I’m off their radar, probably in no small part to moving from spiralofhope.wordpress.com to blog.spiralofhope.com
