Introduction ∞

As I was unable to track down any other resource with light searching, it might be assumed that a web presence for this resource no longer exists. I looked through the University of Toronto website, and was unable to find anything related.

This page is a cache of a website I found through the rec.martial-arts FAQ, part 2 – section 16.32. I figured I’d dump it here since it’s really obscure info.

Basically, this appears to be a personal webpage which must have been up for under a year. It is related to a University of Toronto San Shou club. I didn’t reach out to the university.

Simple, Direct, and Effective: Military San Shou is the hand-to-hand combat system taught to the Chinese Red Army special forces.

What is Military San Shou? ∞

In Chinese, San Shou means the free application of all the realistic individual hand-to-hand combat skills of Kung Fu. “Military” San Shou, also known as Chin Na Ge Dou, as practiced by the Chinese Red Army special forces is a reality-based system of unarmed combat employing the skills of boxing, kicking, grappling, wrestling, and ground fighting. There are no forms, no belts, and no chi-kung exercises. San Shou is strictly a system of realistic self-defense based on the Art of War, physics, anatomy, bio-mechanics, and human physiology. It stresses simplicity and directness, and can be easily understood by all rational human beings.

Development of Military San Shou ∞

The Chinese Military’s Department of Enemy Studies trained soldiers in various Chinese and foreign martial arts and hand-to-hand combat styles, later pitting them against each other and evaluated the results. A standardized San Shou program was developed for each province. In 1963, the various systems were compared on a national level and again, empirically evaluated, establishing a standard San Shou program. This system of hand-to-hand combat has been thoroughly tested in the military training camps, on the battlefield, and in border conflicts against Soviet troops. Soviet soldiers were physically larger than the average Chinese soldier, therefore, the fighting principles and techniques of Military San Shou are specifically designed to deal with a larger opponent.

Chinese Self Defense Studies ∞

Chinese Self Defense Studies is the only organization outside of China that promotes and teach the combative military version of San Shou hand-to-hand combat skills. Founded by Dr. Mizhou Hui, CSDS is dedicated to the education of the combative aspects of Chinese martial arts. CSDS is also the Canadian San Shou Headquarters located in Toronto, Ontario.
