I loved the sunglasses from The Arrival – (1996 movie), and thanks to Product Placement Takes Off, these may be from Luxottica. The Ray-Ban Chaos RB3140 are likely a direct descendent.

I haven’t come anywhere near close to confirming the actual make and model.

  • 45:00 has a perfect and in-focus side-shot which shows a letter V with an elongated right-hand side with a dot under it. I can’t figure out what who owns that logo.

These seems to be the most likely candidate for the brand, although this model is likely for woman.

  • Since the movie The Arrival is from 1996, those these sunglasses are officially from Luxottica and not Ray-Ban.

• In 1995, Luxottica acquired the parent company of LensCrafters to acquire it. This is important because reportedly LensCrafters was involved with incentives during the showing of The Arrival – (1996 movie).

Knock-offs and similar sunglasses ∞

• Various “Steampunk” sunglasses you can buy from China which are cheap and look cheap.
• “Side shields” seems to be a common term.
• American Optical Company made safety glasses with side shields. This appearance inspired later steampunk fashion.

These are pretty close, but aren’t the same.

Some differences between what is in the movie and the Ray-Ban Chaos RB3140:

1. The movie has only one bridge.

   • The RB3140 has a bar overtop of it.

2. The movie has solid metal side-shields with circular holes.

   • The RB3140 has a more mesh-like plastic shields with square holes.

3. The movie has consistent smooth shields.

   • The RB3140 has screws.

4. The movie has thin metal arms.

   • The RB3140 has thin metal arms within a thicker plastic arm.

5. The movie has arms which are either attached to the shields or are hidden by them; I can’t see the hinges.

   • The RB3140 has obvious hinges at the sides.
