I’m not big on drama, and I tend to not pay it much attention. So when TinyME was briefly “advertised” in one of the PCLinuxOS magazine releases (a simple mistake), I tried to not care.
However, when a couple of friends of the Unity Linux team left that magazine, this topic was brought up again. I learned quite a bit more of the politics that was going on.. but there’s no point in my repeating such stuff. It’s just the same old same old..
There had been only the briefest discussion of a Unity Linux magazine before then, and when more serious discussion did start, I had quite a lot of interest. Afterall, documentation is my primary interest .. and I’m tasked to help with PR and communication too.
My thought was to support the idea of a magazine, but by keeping it a separate – and therefore neutral – news outlet. I don’t think this’ll happen right out of the door, but it’s something I’ll definitely want to pursue.
One of my dreams is to externalize all news outlets. Internally, I want to be able to organize whatever information, plans and documentation in a coherent manner by having liaisons between the various different specialties we have. But I want to be able to provide that information both as official press releases and a trickle of news, so that various writers can pick what they want and republish, cite and write about things.
So with something like that, we could both provide specific information and open our doors to interviews by various media. This means that a magazine could be a regular release of information, cleaned up so that it’s suited for the general public. It’s like the difference between getting individual emails from a mailing list, and getting a digest summary every week, but with editorials, better layout and with it generally cleaned-up.
So it looks like we’ll have some more people coming on board to help with documentation, and their primary interest is with a magazine.
The specifics are still being worked out – the subdomain, the hosting, the website software – and a magazine probably won’t be released until the logo has been decided. With the logo would also come the colour and branding and such. I guess the idea is to have the first issue be as high quality as possible, and to keep a consistent look and feel throughout the releases.
