In Ki-Aikido, students (even beginners) are taught the application of Aiki-hold instead of the usual hold/grasp which everyone knows. However, generally only the advance students are able to apply Aiki-hold properly and with confidence.
Aiki-hold is extremely soft and gentle in feel but powerful enough to render immobility to the intended person. If someone holding your wrist possesses such a skill and had mastered the secrets of Aiki-hold, and you are less advanced in the art, chances are – you would be rendered completely immobile. Here, his hand is not on your wrist in a mere friendly “hand-shaking” fashion. His hand, in this particular instance, is functioning as an instrument to keep your entire body spellbound.
What are the secrets of the Aiki-hold then? Words are not necessarily an all inclusive mode of communication in attempting to explain this particular technique. It requires the “personal touch/feel” to compliment what verbal words cannot explain. Below is what can be described of the Aiki-hold with the best verbal explanation possible…
The thumb is first “hooked” onto the wrist’s pulse and the holding process starts with the little finger, followed gradually by the other three fingers. The grasp is soft and gentle while the holding power is generated from the one-point in the lower abdomen. It is this power which ensures total supremacy over an opponent who does not have prior experience in Ki training or Aikido.
