Checking out new web services

I decided to check out this new service.  It aggregates a whole bunch of other stuff.

Based on what it listed, I checked out every website and signed myself up to check out what I may have been missing.  Many things I already knew about, but some of these services were new to me.

  • 2014-07-26 – www.profilactic.com is semi-gone. I don’t think I’ll bother with it anymore. As of this date, their parting message is:

Making some changes to Profilactic

Well, it’s only been 2.5 years since our last blog post, so we will first give you an update on everything that’s happened between the date of that post and yesterday…

OK, you’re all caught up.

Next, we will give you an update on what has happened in the past 24 hours. We are transitioning Profilactic.com to a new URL that focuses only on our Clippings feature.

If you’re not familiar with Clippings, you can stop reading. You’re dead to us. For the rest of you, you’ll know that Clippings is a simple way to keep track of the things that other people are sharing about you. For example, if you had spoken at a conference and someone got a photo of you looking all insightful, you would want to clip that since there aren’t many photos of you looking insightful.

Despite not having updated Profilactic.com in a while, we still have some die-hard Clippings users that we don’t want to abandon. Plus, if we change the name of the site to something that you won’t be embarrassed to say in public, it could help with word of mouth.

So we are going to be retiring the Profilactic.com URL… we’re going to pause a moment so you can get all of those tears out… and relaunching our Clippings feature under mywebclippings.com. Any Clippings you have saved on Profilactic will be carried over to the new site.

We will post another update when everything is ready to go. In the meantime, let us know if you have any questions.

  • 2018-03-05 – There’s been no update.

  • 2019-12-06 – Gone.

There is a lot of duplication in what these services do, and strangely I’ve also been aggregating aggregation services.  That’s a bit Alice in Wonderland for me.

I don’t care to sign up to any social networking-type sites, but there sure were a lot of them, and a lot of social networking aggregators. There are also some multi-post tools which let you simultaneously Twitter, blog, facebook etc.  But there’s no way I’d ever give my blog password over to some random service, nomatter how tempting it might be.

I may not end up sticking with Profilactic, but I at least wanted to give them a big shout out for inspiring me to go exploring.

Some of these I’m familiar with, but I haven’t had a chance to explore all of these services.  I’ve also signed up to some other services aside from these.

I intend to check these out and do a little review on each of them.  I’ll probably end up picking a “best of breed” for each class of service.
