Firefox 29.0 ∞
Tested 2014-05-24 on Lubuntu 14.04 amd64, updated recently. Firefox 29.0, provided in the default repository.
Note that editing entries in the menu is handled by the MenuManipulator extension.
Preferences ∞
Edit > Preferences
-
BAD DEFAULT - The shortcut n for Preferences is non-standard.
- I have this fixed with an extension.
-
BAD DEFAULT - Placing preferences should be in Tools, even on Linux.
- I have this fixed with an extension.
-
BAD DEFAULT - Preferences should be called Options.
- I have this fixed with an extension.
-
BROKEN FUNCTIONALITY - There is no way to not save your profile changes.
- There should be Cancel / Apply / Ok buttons.
- Clicking the preference/options popup's x does not close it and cancel changes.
General > Startup
-
When Firefox starts: [Show my windows and tabs from last time]
- BAD DEFAULT - The web browser should remember tabs by default. This is a motherfucking important feature.
- A new tab already covers the concept of a home page.
-
Home Page: about:blank
General > Downloads
-
(o) Always ask me where to save files
Tabs
(the defaults are good)
Content > Languages
-
Choose your preferred language for displaying pages > Choose
- Select a language to add: [English/United Kingdom [en-gb]]
Applications
(the defaults are fine)
Privacy > Tracking
-
I leave this at default. However, a note:
- (_) Tell sites that I do not want to be tracked
- This is a bit of an unusual concept. Websites can disregard this. Furthermore, then can note this preference, so it's leaking information.
Privacy > Location Bar
-
When using the location bar, suggest: [History]
- The history (Control-h) already has a search feature.
Security
- [_] Block reported attack sites
-
[_] Block reported web forgeries
Holy fuck, these two options are not a good idea at all. I can understand occasional syncing with mozilla to get blacklists, but the notion of sending information about every web domain (or page) I visit to get them verified is horrifying.
Privacy > Passwords
-
[_] Remember passwords for sites
- Firefox is not trustworthy for keeping passwords! Use a specialized piece of software.
Sync
(the defaults are fine)
I don't use this functionality. Holy fuck, why ever would I want to leak out my personal information?
Advanced > General > Accessibility
-
[_] Warn me when websites try to redirect or reload the page
Advanced > General > Browsing
-
[_] Check my spelling as I type
Advanced > General > System Defaults
-
[_] Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup
Advanced > Data Choices
Firefox Health Report
-
[_] Enable Firefox Health Report
- Send my info? No thanks!
Crash Reporter
-
[_] Enable Crash Reporter
- Send my info? No thanks!
Advanced > Network
(the defaults are fine)
Advanced > Update
Automatically update:
-
[_] Search Engines
- Fuck no. I don't even use this functionality.
Advanced > Certificates
(the defaults are fine)
Other ∞
-
View > Toolbars > Menu Bar
- BAD DEFAULT - It's jarring to have the page pop up and down every time I tap the alt key.
- I use the alt key for accesskeys, so this is frequent.
- With this preference adjusted, my keyboard focus doesn't get stuck in the menu.
Toolbar / icon customization ∞
Make sure addons are installed first, most notably Status-4-Evar.
Before this step can be pursued, the bottom status bar has to exist. That addon must have been installed already.
To enter into the UI configuration mode, right-click in the grey space at the top, where there is no tab > Customize.
Entries to remove from the top:
-
Search
- I use the location bar, and the keyword.URL Hack! addon to provide keyword.URL
-
Bookmarks
- I use a hotkey.
-
Downloads
- I use a hotkey.
-
Home
- Hotkey, motherfucker! Do you speak it!
-
YouTube Video and Audio Downloader
- I have it embed a button on YouTube pages.
-
HTTPS Everywhere
- Set it, and forget it.
Entries to remove from the bottom:
-
Progress Meter
Entries to move to the bottom status bar:
- Greasemonkey is moved to the bottom far-left.
-
Stylish is moved to the bottom far-left, to the right of Greasmonkey.
- Bluehell is moved to the far bottom-right.
-
Ghostery is moved to the far bottom-right, to the right of Bluehell.
Entries to add to the top bar:
