ancient outdated notes
World of Warcraft recommended addons >
Still stripping things down and starting somewhat fresh.
NOTE: I have these characters:
- Gnome, Warlock (affliction-dps), Engineering, Jewelcrafting
- Draenei, Shaman (restoration-healer), Skinning (375), Leatherworking (Dragonscale, 375)
- (low level) Blood Elf, Paladin (protection-tank), Enchanting (low), Jewelcrafting (low)
-
(low level) Elf, Druid (feral-dps), Herbalism (low), Alchemy (low)
So this list will be maintained according to those needs. Make suggestions if you wish, but I cannot keep any other combination of race-class-profession up-to-date since I can't really properly continuously-test those other AddOns.
Chatter ∞
All the bugs are being ironed out and I'm still choosing better variations of some AddOns. I still have to get rid of the whole Cosmos package and just list individual AddOns.
This page is still pretty ugly. I'm still working out some way to tidy it up.
I need to write instructions for configuring most of these AddOns still, but it's getting better.
Installing these addons from scratch ∞
These steps will start you from scratch, as though you had a completely new installation of WoW.
If you want to guarantee that you have the same stuff that I do, this is the easiest way to go.
If you're more of a power user, of course you'd completely bypass these steps. =)
Backing up your Warcraft settings ∞
First, exit the game. Unlike Linux, Windows cannot work with files that are already in use.
Back up these three folders:
C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Interface
C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\WTF
C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Cache
- Make a 'backups' folder somewhere
- Make a new folder within it with today's date (like 2008-01-15)
-
Move those three folders inside
Restoring Warcraft's default settings ∞
Now that those three folders have been removed, they have to be recreated by the game.
For most people you would simply launch WoW. For Vista, make sure you run the game as an administrator for this one time.
- Confirm that you see the introduction movie.
- Exit the game
-
Confirm that the Interface, WTF and Cache folders have been re-created.
Basic game setup ∞
Launch WoW, and you'll notice that it has optimized its video settings automatically. Don't be alarmed. =)
Press escape to get your options menu. Check 'video' and 'interface' (and inside of interface is an 'advanced' tab at the top) Update your various settings.
Basic program installation ∞
- WARNING
-
DO NOT INSTALL PROGRAMS FROM SOURCES YOU DO NOT TRUST!
Ace - Install WowAceUpdater
[http://www.cosmosui.org/] Cosmos - Install The Cosmos Patcher: [http://www.cosmosui.org/download.php?t=patcher&f=Cosmos_Win.zip]
[http://www.curse.com/client/] Curse.com client
Curse is bugged and gives Failed to create named pipe which means some features will not work. and has to be exited before you can install anything. Let the "install via curse client" button launch the curse client for itself.
Many people started using alternate VoIP "voice chat" software before Warcraft came out with its own in-game version. For example, I use Ventrilo when raiding.
Ace addons ∞
Ace is the preferred packager of choice because if it's ease of installation and maintenance.
Unfortunately, Ace doesn't have a feature to let you import a list of AddOns for it to install, so you're going doing that part manually. It's still better in the long run for easily updating them all.
Essential: Used frequently and fundamental to gameplay ∞
Significant functionality improvements, Knowledgebase, Automation, etc.

{{orange|It paints pink circles overtop of more useful icons, hiding them.}} To repair this, overwrite AddOns\Cartographer\Cartographer_Notes\Artwork\TrackCircle.tga with a transparent .tga file (I got one from [http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/9496/ Cartographer Complete]'s NoTrackIconPtch v3.3). Problems: You have to do this every time you update Cartographer. The circles are gone, but your other more useful icon is still overwritten. ([http://jira.wowace.com/browse/CART-396 bug report])
-
-
[http://www.clearfont.co.uk/ ClearFont2] -- For nicer fonts
-
CombatDND /combatdnd (but there are no options) -- Sets the DND flag when in combat.
-
Strangely, this addon is also a backup as a combat notifier, but since I already have banzai I wish I could squelch the text this spits out. =(
-
-
[http://wowace.com/wiki/ErrorMonster ErrorMonster] /errormonster -- Removes the stupid/nonessential error messages. So far, I've added these:

[http://files.wowace.com/RicoMiniMap/] [http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info5686-RicoMiniMap.html RicoMiniMap] /rmm
- Better than SimpleMiniMap because I can add QuickMapNotes to the minimap, and also it displays the MapNotes icons. Worse than SimpleMiniMap because the border is heavier and the compasspoints are displayed.
-
one day this can be obsoleted by [http://www.curse.com/downloads/details/8805/ Bongos Skinned Map]
-
[http://www.wowace.com/wiki/Talented Talented] (also Talented_Data) -- A replacement for the talents window. In particular, it lets you save talent templates for easy respeccing.

I don't install Talented_Loader because I hate accidentally hitting 'n' and having my system lag out as it loads Talented. =/
-
Useful, but can live without ∞
Cute/Fun stuff.

QuestAnnouncer
-

[http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/9924/ QuestHelper] /qh -- Helps you walk less when planning quests by lining them up for you. Works with Cartographer to give waypoints. Very slick.
- To help out: On startup or reloadui, check if questhelper notes new quests. Then email qhaddon at gmail.com C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\WTF\Account\ACCOUNT_NAME\SavedVariables\QuestHelper.lua

{{orange|This adds a duplicate flight timer.}}
-
[http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/4116/ MapNotes] v4.14.20300 -- For adding notes to your map.
-
The only additional enhancement I could think of would be PROPER maps and not just notes over the default garbage ones.
-
-
[http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/2003/ Bongos2] 1.9.6 /bongos for the gui, or /bongos menu for the text menu. -- A button bar helper thingy. A bit rough in some cases but definitely usable and has some really awesome functionality. It's also a hotkey manager! AWESOME. You can set hotkeys right from your spellbook.
-
[http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/7731/ LiteAssist] 1.8 -- Helps you fight your target's target (ToT). This largely removes the need for UIFrames which do ToT. Set up your primary person and a hotkey to fight whatever they're fighting.
- Set it up with hotkeys: F to assist, shift-F to learn your target, ctrl-F to learn your mouseover target.
-
requires the titan panel, which curse will remind you about. I use the regular titan panel and not the fan's update.
Important: Convenience, or otherwise really useful/cool ∞
Removing excess features/spam/annoyances, additional information, beautification, etc.
-
[http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/10061/ Armory] v2.4.6 /ar -- Lets you view the character details of any of your characters while logged in as any other. Doesn't modify your mouseover to let you easily compare with the selected alt's worn equipment.
-
[http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/7774/ Ogri'Lazy] 1.0.7 /relic -- My brain can't handle this semi-delayed and nearly-Simon-Says game, and I don't want to waste any more paper.
-
/relic keyset syskeys to use 1-2-4-5 numberpad keys. It's still INSANE but it's better than trying to reach the RYGB keys.
-
-
[http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/2775/ OmniCC] /occ -- Shows the text for cooldown timers.
-
[http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/4784/] Outfitter 4.1 -- For equipment sets and auto-swapping. It even suggests kits for certain purposes (like dps vs healing). Does automatic trinket-cycling, but it doesn't seem to work the way I expect since unequipping some trinkets on cooldown will disable their power. Even understands when the bank is open and will withdraw/deposit intelligently. Spec-fucking-tacular. Can even auto-equip based on certain actions like skinning or fishing.
- configuration: Set up a few suits. Enable hotkeys for them. Then go into your hotkey manager (in Khaos Configure) and assign keys. I reassigned control-1 through 0 for suits 1-10 so I can manually swap suits with hotkeys. When using hotkeys it does say what you're swapping to. Then go check out the main Outfitter topic for more details and some scripts I use.
- /outfitter sound off
-
to disable that ugly/useless icon bar, open your character, then click the outfitter icon at its top-right, then go to the options tab and un-check "show outfit bar". There is no slash command. =/
-
[http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/9943/ StopInvites] 1.1 /stopinvites -- A simple addon that stops level 1 spammers in starting zones from inviting you to a group. Also has options to ignore group, guild, and duel invites. Uses Ace, configure with the /stopinvites command or through the ace addon manager if you have it.
- /stopinvites duel
- /stopinvites guild
-
/stopinvites display
-
[http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/8709/ TipTac] /tiptac TipTac08.02.24 -- lets me lift up the bottom-right tooltip and put it next to the mouse! it also shows buffs and other handy things *right there*.
-
bug: non-unit tooltip doesn't show a mining deposit if it's set to smart layout
-
-
[http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/3921/] [http://www.wimaddon.com/ Wow Instant Messenger (WowIM/WIM)] 2.3.56 /wim -- Groups whispers together. Also allows URL copying. Some configuration options:
-
[_] Ignore arrow keys while typing messages.
-
Useful, but can live without ∞
Cute/Fun stuff.
-
[http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/638/ FlightMap] v2.2-1 /flightmap -- Flight timer and path helper. Also shows some stellar icons on the mini and world maps. Just awesome.
-
The flight bar should count DOWN, not up. =/ If using Quartz (with Cosmos), check its settings and set flight to 'deplete'.
-
-
[http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/7266/ QuickMapNotes] version 'qmn' April 22, 2007 /qmn -- For easily adding notes using MapNotes.
- out of date! Works when forced. Does not work on the minimap with SimpleMiniMap, which is actually annoying.
-
Not actually quick. It should work with something like /qmn 10.1,10.2 this is my text then pressing tab in the fields, pressing enter to save the note
-
[http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/1990/ Eloquence] Beta 0.97b /elo -- This is good for its ability to expand acronyms.
-
Also has some general chat-channel customization. There seems to be a lot of overlap with chat adddons.
-
Other AddOns ∞
Not Ace, and not manageable by curse.com's updater.
Essential: Used frequently and fundamental to gameplay ∞
Significant functionality improvements, Knowledgebase, Automation, etc.
-
[http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info5108-Clique.html Clique] r93 /clique (use the new spellbook tab) -- Allows you to easily assign key-click combinations to click on a UnitFrame to cast an assigned spell at them without losing focus. Very useful for healing and curing.
-
[http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info7017-LightHeaded.html] LightHeaded r216 /lh -- Quest helper.
-
/lh sound
-
-
[http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info7032-TomTom.html] TomTom r121 -- Map helper.
-
Simple waypoints. I think that it can't be replaced because it's needed by LightHeaded, but it seems to work ok in concert with Cartographer. At any rate, I do use the two together so that I can click coord links and make waypoints and marks. I end up doing /noway to remove waypoints and I'm left with simple waypoint dots and not the big overhead arrow.
-
Important: Convenience, or otherwise really useful/cool ∞
Removing excess features/spam/annoyances, additional information, beautification, etc.
-
[http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info6887-DoubleWide.html DoubleWide] 0.6-20400 -- Widens the quest logs so you can see more.
-
Man I hate the original tiny quest window. This is such a blessing.
-
Useful, but can live without ∞
Cute/Fun stuff.
Updating these addons ∞
It's a good idea to back up your Cache, Interface and WTF folders before running an update.
- Ace AddOns
- Run the WowAceUpdater
-
press F10. Give it some time and it'll refresh itself. It won't tell you when it's done. When it says 'Ready...' at the bottom, then you can exit it.
- Cosmos AddOns
- Run the Cosmos patcher
- click 'Patch Cosmos'. Wait for a long long time. When it's done a popup will appear which displays the list of AddOns which can be updated.
-
Click 'Continue Update'. Wait for a long long time, again. When that's done, click 'Exit'.
- Other AddOns
- Visit the AddOn's page to learn if there is a new version
- Download the new version
- Unzip it in a temporary place
- Look at the list of folders you've created. In your AddOns folder, delete any matching folder names. You will not be deleting the preferences for the AddOn, don't worry.
-
Move the folder into your AddOns folder.
To do ∞
-
https://web.archive.org/web/20160226213442/http://www.curse.com:80/client -- trying it
-
find something that does healthstone-monitoring so I can know when to make more and who to give them to.
-
A better-managed friends list
-
A better history of grouping
-
automatically abandon quests you fail
-
and report it in the chat window..
-
-
when you abandon a quest, it says it in the chat log.
-

-

-
CombatDND -- I wish I could squelch the text this spits out. =(
-
Add back the mouseover delay when hovering over stuff.
-
NotesUNeed could replace SocialNotes.
-
Or it would, if I could figure out how to properly maintain quest notes. Check/ask for help.
-
-
[http://www.curse.com/downloads/details/8805/ Bongos Skinned Map] might be cool if I could figure out how to make it work..
To research:
-
MetaMap
- But it's not being updated properly by the original author.
- obsoletes MapNotes, maybe. I can't figure out how to import mapnotes.
- obsoletes FlightMap, maybe.
-
Has a fair waypoint arrow.

Unfortunately, the author doesn't allow customization so I'd have to hack the source to modify things. Not hard, but annoying enough that I might never do this.
- spam-protection:
