As it’s been years since I posted Checking out new web services, I thought I’d do a followup on where those services have gone since then.

The results are not good..

The services ∞

• del.icio.us [ 1 ]

  • 2014-07-26 — Apparently my account was deleted, probably from inactivity. Their old service is being shut down. I signed up anew: delicious.com/spiralofhope
  • 2019-11-16 — I completely forgot about this, and apparently delicious.com is gone too.

• digg [ 2 ]

  • Login uses Facebook/Google/Twitter.
  • 2014-07-26 — Apparently my account [ 3 ] was deleted, probably from inactivity.
  • 2017-07-28 — Gone.

• Diigo

  • Login uses Facebook/Twitter/Google/Yahoo/OpenID.
  • 2014-07-26 — Signing in with OpenID is broken.

• Flickr

  • Flickr login uses Yahoo, which I don’t have an account for. So .. uh.. I have no idea how I signed up. Maybe I used to have a Yahoo account, but I have no notes for that anywhere.

  • 2014-07-26 — discontinued

• Howcast

  • 2014-07-26 — My old profile URL [ 5 ] isn’t working. My old login URL isn’t working, and I actually had to hunt around to figure out how to log in. Another website pointed the way to users.howcast.com/login which has an invalid security certificate. I was able to log in, but their avatar uploader never shows, and when I try to make any profile changes, I get “Oops! We had an internal server problem Please try reloading your browser”.

  • 2014-07-26 — Gone.

• kirtsy

  • 2014-07-26 — My old profile URL [ 7 ] isn’t working. I have no login URL to attempt. There doesn’t seem to be a way to log in from their home page. Perhaps the user functionality is gone.
  • 2017-07-28 — I think it’s gone.

• Loudervoice

  • 2014-07-26 — My old profile URL [ 8 ] isn’t working. I have no login URL to attempt. There doesn’t seem to be a way to log in from their home page. Perhaps the user functionality is gone. I found a reference to louderyou.com dead: most recent archive but I see no way to sign up or log in there.
  • 2017-07-28 — I think it’s gone.

• mEgo (was www.mego.com)

  • 2014-07-26 — My profile URL [ 9 ] doesn’t seem to load. Visiting mego.com gives “back better than ever, soon.” with a link to Twitter (@ari) (Ariel McNichol, arielmcnichol.com)

  • 2017-07-28 — My profile URL redirects to beta.mego.com/member/spiralofhope/ and www.mego.com gives

       MEGO IS COMING BACK SOON, BETTER THAN EVER!

  • 2019-11-16 — It’s there, though I haven’t looked around.
  • 2022-02-24 — Abandoned – The URL is dead.

• Multiply [ 10 ]

  • 2014-07-26 — Abandoned – Gone as of 2013-05-31.

• ODEO [ 11 ]

  • 2014-07-26 — odeo.com redirects to odeoenterprise.com which is down.

• Picasa Web Albums

  • 2014-07-26 — My old profile URL [ 12 ] redirects to Google+ and I now have an ugly plus.google.com album URL. I guess google just bought them out to shut them down.
  • 2019-11-16 — My Google+ profile URL [ 13 ] is gone.

• RedBubble

  • 2014-07-26 — Although my user URL is there, I am unable to sign up. I recorded and used my password before, but it doesn’t work. I cannot reset my password as the service provider for the email I signed up with shut down. Sigh.

• Revver

  • 2014-07-26 — Gone.

• Scoutle.com

  • 2014-07-26 — My old profile URL redirects to their home page. I recorded no login information, so I presume I signed up with OpenUD. Attempting to log in with my OpenID gives “Unable to login, OpenID seemed to be invalid.” I signed up anew, and I am unable to paste my complex password to do so. Sigh. I messaged them.

• Second Brain [ 14 ]

  • 2014-07-26 — Seems to be down.
  • 2019-11-16 — Gone

• Sevenload [ 15 ]

  • 2014-07-26 — Gone.

• Simpy [ 16 ]

  • 2014-07-26 — Gone.

• Slide [ 17 ]

  • 2014-07-26 — Gone.

• StumbleUpon

  • 2014-07-26 — Up and running and as strong as ever. I haven’t used this since first signing up.

• Suprglu

  • 2014-07-26 — My old profile URL [ 18 ] redirects to www.getharvest.com/ Seems to be gone.

• Thingfo [ 19 ]

  • 2014-07-26 — Seems to be down.
  • 2017-07-28 — Gone.

• tumblr

  • 2014-07-26 — Signing in just redirects me to the login page. Sigh.
  • 2017-07-28 — It’s there, but I don’t care about it.

• Twine [ 20 ]

  • 2014-07-26 — Gone.

• Twitter

  • 2014-07-26 — Up and running and as strong as ever. While I’ve attempted to use this service, it’s horrible and overwhelming and pointless.
  • 2017-07-28 — It’s still popular and pointless.

• Veoh

  • 2014-07-26 — They locked down my account, and I had to use their forgot password feature to reset it.
  • 2017-07-28 — I don’t know, I guess it’s still there.

• Vimeo

  • 2014-07-26 — Up and running and as strong as ever.
  • 2017-07-28 — Still going strong, but has one of those fancy interfaces.

What I use ∞

So, I’ve used two out of all of these services..

• YouTube

  • I haven’t uploaded anything since my test video. I’ve commented occasionally (which is Google+)
  • 2014-07-26 — Up and running and as strong as ever.
  • 2017-07-28 — Same old. Requires a phone number to sign up.

• Reddit

  • I use(d) this for it’s Path of Exile – (2013 game) channel.
  • 2014-07-26 — Up and running and as strong as ever.
  • 2019-11-16 — I deleted my accounts [ 21 ] [ 22 ] in protest at them being a bunch of fucktards.
