KWrite 4.5.6 has a stupid bug: Go to the top of a file and press enter. The blank lines appear above the cursor. =/

Originally tested under Linux (Slackware 7.0, 8.1). Disliked because of speed issues.
Later in life, I also used KDE in a few LiveCD distributions and was quite impressed. Using it full-time for PCLinuxOS (.89 and on) because of various bits of very cool advanced functionality (autoproperties allowing per-window preferences, better hotkeys).
I was very impressed with application consistancy and usability.
-
Be able to redefine hotkeys in an intelligent way. Example: When running program x:
- Be able to swap out certain hotkeys when that application is focused.
- Be able to change certain global hotkeys when that application is alive.
- Be able to transparently redefine keys which are sent when that application is active.
-- example: when Screen is running,alt-tab
sendscontrol-a control-c
- An application hotkey of
alt-control-s
doesn't seem to work. I had to makeshift-alt-control-s
. This could be a PCLinuxOS quirk somehow, I don't know. This works on another setup though, so it's very strange. - The "show desktop" feature (which I use as a hotkey) undoes itself when I launch an application. It shouldn't. When I show the desktop and then launch an application I should only see the application appear.
- The KDE window manager crashes in spectacular ways. Shouldn't it auto-restart? This is probably an issue with the settings in PCLinuxOS. I solved this with my Blackbox startup settings, but things are different here.
-
The "KDE LoColor" Lowcolor Icon Theme has grey boxes around the icons.
Notes ∞
-
dcopserver
handles all sorts of stuff. -
dcop
lists the KDE/QT software that's running. -
How do I fix the system bar icon for Konqueror? It keep shifting around and I can never find konqueror when I want it.. it takes too long to figure out which application konqueror is, because it mutates depending upon what website/whatever in what tab I have visible in it.
In /usr/share/autostart
(well, technically $KDEDIR/share/autostart
), there are a number of KDE shortcuts which govern the apps loaded at startup.
To stop the panel running, remove panel.desktop
from this directory.

These notes are quite old! I don't use KDE anymore, and I doubt I ever will.
- Amount of space still (Konqueror is okay - check others)
- The startup sound should happen at the completion of the restore.
- There is a tip that says the BII decoration title bars stay visible, this isn't entirely true.
- I don't want icon zooming, but I want the button to raise up as I hover over, as with konq buttons
- If in the shell -
alt-Fx
(e.g.F1
) is to change a virtual console, why is itcontrol-Fx
(e.g.F1
) in KDE? - Starting up some apps (like Kmail), the supposedly start off maximized, but aren't. I have to restore them then maximize them to make them full screen system guard can't properly maximize with the 'sensor browser' panel, after turning the status bar on
- System guard should be able to point at an app to kill it, or be able to kill an app from it's top bar.
- KDE's panel shouldn't be set up with apps that aren't installed. duh.
- Panel should have the option of a 0 second 'hide'
- If I
right-click
on the desktop and 'create new', the icon I create should go where Iright-clicked
. - Allow
control-y
to redo. Globally. - Be able to close an app off while it's loading up, and not have to wait for it to load.
- When I copy text containing a URL, a screen pops up. All handy and whatnot, but how to I NOT do that?
- When highlighting a url/copying, give an option to bookmark it
- Provide a 'restart session' and 'restart system' option on logout.
- Accessibility, keyboard mouse is very very busted. From a clean install it hops around. Apparently one must reload X to load changed settings sound server settings - tab settings are bad
- Not 640x480 friendly, there is no note that
alt-leftmouse
is to move a window. Lots of stuff runs off the screen. - Copy/paste is broken. cannot
control-c
alt-tab
andcontrol-v
predictably. Cannotcontrol-v
over highlighted text. should includeshift-ins
/shift-del
- Pathetic default fonts (640x480 at least), cannot reliably change them!
- Cannot
alt-x
for some stuff in many many menus - Cannot type a letter, must
alt-x
in some cases, like yes/no prompts - KWrite has a sad, sad font
- bad
tab
/shift-tab
in some screens - create a good tutorial/links to documents, plant a link on the desktop
- Poor keyboard use - no
alt-space
, usesalt-F1
notcontrol-escape
to bring up the taskbar. cannot browse the taskbar with a keyboard only (without keyboard mouse functions) control-escape
brings up the system guard, but while it is loading, the standard 'loading' icon does not appear on the taskbar- Shell starts off with a BAD font, the shell borks itself and plants various misc chars during sound access (
amp
/mpg123) - If KDE spawns a window, it ought to pop up in the same screen. e.g. if I load a link, then switch a screen
- Should allow active Windows-like screen resolution changes
- When restoring apps on active login, it doesn't show each app on the taskbar as they start up
- Should be able to remove ridiculous borders
-
Should be able to fullscreen any screen without relying on software support

X, KDE or Firefox seem to have a leak somewhere. When I started up KDE, and decided to paste, I got:
Jim Hugunin of IronPython fame was in my talk, and we had a fun chat afterwards about the difficulties in getting dynamic languages to interop with the statically typed languages on the CLR. While we were chatting, Guido van Rossum came up to chat with Jim, and it was an honor to be introduced to one of the really great innovators in the open source space.
This was from a blog entry on iunknown.com which I had visited sometime earlier.
Notes ∞
Menus are kept in:
/usr/share/applnk/
/usr/share/applnk-mdk/
- Blackbox has notes on converting KDE menus to Blackbox menus.
Want to see KDE tray applications? Check out Blackbox and fbpanel or the Xfce suite. Applications like KGPG DO work as expected! Awesome!
