An MP3 transcoder.
This has been an essential part of my toolkit for as long as I’ve had CDs. These days I use it primarily to convert various other audio formats to MP3.

my rip-audio-from-video.sh script uses
lame.

So far, I still believe strongly in lame --r3mix
I still use mp3. I will look into ogg vorbis sometime soon.
the mp3 pro whatever it is is garbage. As far as quality goes, what it does is already handled nicely by vbr.. and it’s space saving only applies to low low quality anyway.
Lame --r3mix is completely obsolete these days, in preference for other switches which I haven’t learned. I did all my ripping years back, so I don’t particularly care to revisit this topic right now. Yes, I’ve bought CDs since then but I haven’t bothered to listen to them yet. Hrmph.
