I’m not big on drama, and I tend to not pay it much attention. So when TinyME was briefly “advertised” in one of the PCLinuxOS magazine releases (a simple mistake), I tried to not care.
However, when a couple of friends of the Unity Linux team left that magazine, this topic was brought up again. I learned quite a bit more of the politics that was going on.. but there’s no point in my repeating such stuff. It’s just the same old same old..

Some time ago I stepped away from packaging so that I could focus more on documentation. So I’m mostly out of the loop on specifics.
We’re a couple of packages away from a basesystem. That basesystem would be the list of all packages needed for a working “slim” ISO.
I understand that mklivecd is proving to be difficult to get working with the new kernel, but gettinther is on the right path to solving the issues.
KDE4 is a few packages away from being finished in the sense that “it works”. By stealing some packages from Mandriva, Neverstopdreaming got it running. However, more work needs to be done to brand and tweak it.
There is still interest in KDE 3.5. It’s being worked on too.
Oh, and I also saw an alpha of a branch. This kind of thing is possible because we have a couple of people who are using Unity Linux – even in this pre-release state – as their main setup. Brave.

The Unity Linux build3 internal ISO came out today. There’s more to be done to create an actual LiveCD. There’s still some arguing as to which window manager would be included in a later release. Something physically small, with few dependencies and with reasonable functionality. To me, that leaves about a half a dozen to choose between.
I’ve downloaded build3 and I’ll check it out when I have some time. There’s a tutorial which has to be rewritten to help our packagers out.
Since the toolchain also got updated, two RPMs I packaged have to be redone.

As of last night we have a tight basesystem done for Unity Linux. Our base is no longer dependent on the old PCLinuxOS (TinyME) base.
RPMs for meta-packages are being built today and over the weekend. They will get the remaining development tools wrapped up. The possibility of a basic X install is being discussed.

Just to follow up with the Graphics Team update, I wanted to talk about some other things which have been discussed.

The developers have been working away on their own forum for a while now. After reviewing a couple of their “meet and greet” threads[1], I updated the wiki’s “About” page.

I hacked together some outward-facing pages to at least start things rolling. I don’t think the wiki was even linked-to from any public place before my last Unity Linux blog post.

Some developers left PCLinuxOS and founded this new distro with others.
It was aimed toward making an easily mklivecd-remasterable base distribution.
As of 2016-04-18 there is some activity again, but they are a ways away from anything release-quality.
