A tactics game so good it’s worth buying a PlayStation 2 for. It got released on Steam so it’s a game so good it’s worth buying a PC for. :)

2018-03-05 – Windows ∞

• I got a USB adapter for my PS2 controller, and it works as-is.

Everything seems to be the same.

• Fast startup, saving, and loading (of course).
• Several oldschool modes.
• The sprites aren’t really improved, which makes things look odd compared to the improved backgrounds, effects and especially the UI.
• Talking to a shopkeeper is slow.

• No keyboard control for typing names.

Notes:

• I don’t think you can import your old save files by any means..

• There’s a new “mascot” character.

2018-02-23 – PS2 ∞

• There’s no way to know if an item has been max-explored, except to un-equip it, go to the item person, do a go to item world and see if it’s greyed out.

2017-01-13 – PS2 ∞

• Can’t skip a tutorial once in it.
• The exit to menu feature isn’t harsh enough about throwing away the current game. I’ve done it accidentally twice, thinking I could exit a map and go back to my castle.
• Cannot re-play a tutorial map’s tutorial.
• Geo-tile colour changes take too long.
• The bonus gauge takes too long to fill.

2007-07-17 – PS2 ∞

• Definitely an interesting tactics game. Has a lot of building. Seems pretty overwhelming at first.
• It takes a while to figure out the UI. There are extra steps to do some things, like move equipment around.
• Certain specialists in weapons will give extra effects. For example, a hypnotizer will put people to sleep when you attack them with a weapon that has one in there. I’m not sure about the specifics though. A lot of things are hidden.
• Apparently there’s another rating of weapon skill – the “S” class. I think it’s better than “A”. Ninja gets this with unarmed. Neat.

• I don’t like the system of masters and pupils.. it’s so odd.

PC ∞

Un-checked on PS/2.

• A panel under a character influences them at the time they are set, not the time they are executed. Setting an action, geo-changing a panel under a character, then executing all actions will not for example remove a +1 attack.

  • I do not know if it will also doubly-apply the new geo color, but my intuition says it will not.

PS/2 ∞

Un-checked on PC.

• When learning skills from your pupil and intending to rebuild, don’t rebuild until you have x% more with all of your skills, otherwise you’ll have 0 ranks in the skill and can’t use it.
• Ninjas are practically invulnerable. Their high speed makes everyone miss, and somehow when a fighter-type has more speed than a ninja-type the ninja is still missed all the time. Spells have a very hard time landing on a ninja, even your allied healing spells. Odd.
• The player/enemy turn-switching is too damned slow.
• It would be nice if there were some kind of automated-play, so I can just let my guys loose to wreck havoc.

• There are monster-characters which I can’t afford at all. It’s rather frustrating to see them all sitting there. =)

  • 2017-01-19 – I have since learned that capturing them is the cheaper alternative.
• After doing a challenge and going up a rank, it kicks you out to the main menu. It’s annoying because I often want to do multiple challenges in a row. But it’s nice that it heals me. =)

• I cannot start a new game and skip the bullshit intro nonsense!! This is so damned annoying!

  • I decided to make a post-intro save, and a second post-tutorial save.

Differences between the PS/2 and PC versions ∞

• The PC has alternate and enhanced graphics.

  • Most of it looks like shit.
• The PC has mouse+keyboard controls, of course.

• The PC lacks correct controls and requires a different button mapping to use a PS/2 controller USB convertor. The best setup ends up requiring R2 to be held to allow R1 and R2 to rotate the camera.

• The item collection at the south of the main room is new on the PC.
• The music functionality in the right-side room is new on the PC.

• The assembly guy is a a Prinny on the PC.

Majin transmutation unlock levels ∞

• Level 120 is confirmed wrong (on the PC). It is somewhere between 120 and 142.
• Somewhere 143-252 was confirmed confirmed for Tera Majin.
• No other numbers have been confirmed for the PC.

• No numbers have been confirmed for the PS/2.

Steam version ∞

• F4 toggles fullscreen

• There is no functionality to mute when it’s in the background.

Cannot launch; opens three buttons but no window ∞

Clicking play only displays the minimize/maximize/close buttons and a minimal title, but no window. It then exits on its own.

This may happen if the application is force-killed, and may be associated with switching Windows 11 to force the use of a CPU-based internal graphics from using a graphics card.

Your settings will be deleted. Presumably you use cloud storage for saved games so those are safe. There may be a way to edit the config file to solve this instead; that option was not explored.

1. Uninstall it: right-click > Manage > Uninstall
2. Delete its lingering folder. The default location is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Disgaea PC

3. Install it.

It will re-sync its saved games from the cloud.

• Hold R2 to use L1/R1 to rotate the view.

• □ is unused.

Steam/PC XBox controller settings ∞

• Hold X to use the shoulder buttons to rotate the view.
