was libav.org

A suite of tools to diddle with multimedia stuff and things.

See also FFmpeg, which has valuable usage notes.

• Abandoned – The project is closed and the website is dead.

• For what it’s worth, there is still a libav-user mailing list

• My shell scripts that rely on Libav’s avconv:

  • rip-audio-from-video.sh
  • transcode-audio-into-mp3.sh

• Audacity uses this, at least for m4a exporting.

• 2018-10-21 – Briefly attempted to get this working on Windows Subsystem for Linux / Debian

  • .. but while avconv.exe worked when unpacked, copying its files into /usr would not work. Whatever, FFmpeg worked.

• TODO – Switched to FFmpeg version – on DISTRIBUTION

  • Switched due to Devuan 1.0.0 avconv crash.
  • FFmpeg was never deprecated. See also https://wiki.debian.org/Debate/libav-provider/ffmpeg
• 2018-04-09 – 6:11.12-1~deb8u1 on Devuan-1.0.0-jessie-i386-DVD

• 2017-07-08 – (version not recorded) on Devuan-1.0.0-jessie-i386-DVD

  • apt-get install libav-tools

• 2017-05-31 – 6:11.9-1~deb8u1, on Devuan beta1

  • Worked fine.
• 2016-04-06 – 11.4, on Slackware 14.1

• 2016-03-26 – 6:9.18-0ubuntu0.14.04.1, on Lubuntu 14.04.4 LTS

  • Worked fine.

• ~2016-03-26 – FFmpeg was deprecated, and replaced with Libav, but I have notes added there.

I went through hell to try to work around a Devuan 1.0.0 avconv crash (Devuan).

Installed with slpkg:
