A BitTorrent client.
I use this because it's cross-platform, not just Windows and Linux, but also Linux/ARM, for my CubieTruck and Raspberry Pi.
Windows support is not officially released.
-
2019-01-16 - Replaced with Deluge again, as Transmission doesn't have an official Windows port.
- 2021-06-04 -- I see there is a preview release but it appears to have severe problems, and hasn't been updated in a very long time.

2017-11-06 - 2.92 (unofficial) (Qt) ∞
- This is the "official" client for Windows. I was using an earlier port.
- Seems to work just fine
- It has its own tray functionality, yay!
-
Fuck me, I forgot the Qt version doesn't allow mass-adding trackers.
- This is a major problem. Maybe I have to get into editing the magnet link directly, to add trackers. Ugh.
-
I thought maybe I could mass-add using the browser interface, but it isn't compiled in. Sigh.
2016-12-26 - 2.84 (14307) (GTK+) ∞
-
After all this time, it still does not honour queue changes.

This is most likely to occur if your dotfiles are in a location encrypted by eCryptfs.

Local (unofficial Windows) release (shows version 2.84).
ANNOUNCEMENT: The Transmission project will ship Windows binaries (different from these releases).
ANNOUNCEMENT: There will be no 2.9x or later version from this project.
I don't see a reference to Windows binaries on the official Transmission website.
.. seems to work just fine.
2016-03-28 - 2.84 (14307) (GTK+) ∞
I installed this using slpkg:
\slpkg -s sbo transmission
2016-03-26 - 2.82 (14160) (GTK+) ∞
I installed this from Lubuntu's repository.

I can't move an item up/down in the queue and have it remembered on next startup.
(date not recorded) 2.22 (12099) (GTK+) ∞
I noticed that throttling failed!
It went somewhat-uncapped, where my upload speed was around double what it should be. I carefully checked all global settings and then checked every torrent. All settings were correct.
This may be responsible for my ISP resetting my connection on me.. I'm not sure.
2010-11-25 - 2.04 (11151) ∞
Replaces Deluge.
Deluge has these advantages over Transmission:
- Has a daemon that can start up with the system
- Has a console client.
-
Transmission doesn't move torrents to a specified place, it can only move them to the trash.
- What/where the heck is "the trash" anyways? I found it in
/mountpoint/.Trash-1000
.. wtf.
- What/where the heck is "the trash" anyways? I found it in
- Can sort the list arbitrarily.
- Can throttle bandwidth usage and calculate in any network traffic overhead. I can't tell if Transmission can do that at all or if it is just doing that automatically.
- Deluge can pre-allocate or not pre-allocate space. Transmission pre-allocates. But.. what in the fuck is it pre-allocating those files WITH? Not zeroes. Holy shit, is it encapsulating old data from my disk? So I need to sterilize any
.part
files that I can't completely download. Shit shit shit! -
I can rename files within the client, and keep on downloading or seeding.
Transmission has these advantages over Deluge:
- Scheduling is built-in. Deluge can do it with a plugin. Transmission's scheduling can be turned on and off where at last check if I did that with Deluge I'd have to reset every single scheduling configuration.. which is a pain.
- Seems to be lighter.
- Can be summoned by Firefox directly.
- Deluge had a horrifying bug where I could never trust any of its "complete" downloads. Stuff was randomly corrupted. Maybe Transmissions is the same, but that remains to be seen.
-
Deluge had a fucking obnoxious auto manage feature which never worked correctly. I had to constantly disable it.
It's freaking annoying to use the tray icon. Who the fuck thinks up a checkbox for Show Transmission ? Eesh. Plus there's already an existing hotkey for Start All . I should be able to just click the damned thing to alternate between showing and hiding transmission. Right-clicking should pull up the menu, not left-clicking.
