Some developers left PCLinuxOS and founded this new distro with others.
It was aimed toward making an easily mklivecd-remasterable base distribution.
As of 2016-04-18 there is some activity again, but they are a ways away from anything release-quality.

Very nice, but rough around the edges – doesn’t detect my video well. v4 of this distro looks very promising!

The official distribution has been retired but has been forked/continued as woof-CE. Barry continues to fiddle around with his own stuff. I see Quirky 7.0.3 as of 2015-05-08.

What was, and probably still is, an extremely beautiful and easy to use distribution. Where Slackware had long-held the title “it just works”, PCLinuxOS does that for users who are completely new to Linux.
From its earliest days its hardware detection was renown, its suite of software astounding, and its remastering capability extraordinary.
It was my daily driver for a long time.
Was nicknamed “pclos” for years.

The oldest extant distribution, Slackware focuses on a sort of straightforwardness. It’s not “light” or “easy”, it is what it is. It’s not cripplingly-difficult like Gentoo or Arch Linux. Using it is a little taxing on the mind, but doesn’t actually require a whole lot of deep understanding. It’s install was straightforward.
Using it, I feel “closer” to my computer.

dd works, I don’t see a package manager for the liveUSB. The installation does not work: The bootloader is not magical.Discontinued

Since I tested xandros-301-ocd-installation, it must have been after 3.0 (2004-12-08) and before 4.0 (2006-06-21)
LiveCD. I don’t particularly like it.
