Platform / Computer / Hardware > Operating System > Operating environment > Software > Projects (or whatever)
A set of applications which run on a computer's operating system. They allow a person to actually make use of a computer. These applications are the link between the user's desires and fulfillment of those desires, e.g. projects.
This topic is the never-ending quest for a comfortable operating system and suite of software.
Topic introduction ∞
I have played around with a lot of operating systems and user interfaces in my time.
~2006-04-22 - I have tinkered lightly with some of them, and others I have gutted and done surgery. Sometimes I have had extremely good success with my play, and other times I have been constantly annoyed at how badly made an OS can be. I have been around a long long time, and I seen some pretty good advancements in the interaction between users and computers. Although it is true that many, perhaps most, users have become more and more educated, I feel that there is something missing. Time and time again I have noticed glaring oversights in how a computer presents itself to it's user. It irks me to no end. It aggravates me to the point that I look down on designers, marketers, inventors, programmers and whoever else steps into my field of view. This research project is an attempt to vulcanize all my wandering thoughts on this issue. Ultimately I will be detailing my annoyances and posing solutions to each problem.
2019-08-04 - I've been doing just this for some time. See /tag/software+reviews.

Underneath everything is a combination of things:
- Portable computing may be important.
- Possibly Virtualization or Emulation
Several technical layers, exposed to developers. See Programming.
