The Nevers - (2021 show) image

An unknown event gave alternate-past Victorian Londoners a random superpower, and their numbers became pronounced enough to attract the attention of worried politicians. Or something.

Really interesting! I guess it's worth watching, but it slide sideways and got too strange to follow. It really needed more seasons to figure it's shit out, but the woke brigade MeToo-dogpiled Joss Whedon without evidence so he got shunned.

Constantine (2014 - 2015) image

A man attains mystical powers originally for selfish reasons, but they taint with a life fraught with danger and demons.

Not a bad show, but the lead character's personality isn't attracting, and there's the old celestial stick-up-the-ass personality in another. The lead female is hot. Hotty hot hot.

This was cancelled after one season. Back in the 90s this show would have done well, but I'm guessing this genre has alternately been well-poisoned or saturated. This show has too much it has to be better than to catch enough attention to survive. I think that it's magic-fantasy was competing with an extraordinarily-strong superhero-fantasy genre.

The Wizards of Aus (2016-) image

Escaping the magic realm, a wizard goes to Melbourn Australia to try to live a normal life, but the magical inhabitants from his realm hop on a bandwagon to join him, and end up ruining everything.

Good fun. Not too great, not too funny, but light entertainment. It's not quite bubblegum. Most especially recommended for fans of fantasy fiction, and even more so for those familiar with the Australian flavour of comedy.

  • This was released as three television episodes, and later released as six parts on YouTube.

Into the Badlands (2015-) image

The world, having gone to shit for some reason, has no guns for some reason, and, in a world nothing like Mad Max - (1979 movie), things happen for various reasons.

It's a manly man man show, with fighting and stuff, though it does have some sort of fantasy fiction quietly woven in. It seemed fair, but I struggled to get through season one and just didn't care after a couple of episodes of season two.

Once Upon A Time (2011-) poster 3

was https://abc.com/shows/once-upon-a-time

A disturbed child convinces a complete stranger that she's his mother, embroiling her in a town-wide fantasy with his sociopathic mother as an adversary.

I guess this would be entertaining for little girls. This didn't grab me in the first few episodes. It needs more explosions, or maybe a male role model.

  • Abandoned - ABC doesn't list it any more.

I'll add notes when I re-watch this series.
Do not watch this without respecting the Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel viewing order.

Angel - (1999 show) image

Entertainment > Television >

(on Wikipedia)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0162065/

A vampire, cursed with a soul to be immortally haunted by his past, hopes for absolution by fighting the damned.

An astonishing series. The characters and story are outstanding. While built upon/within the Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe, it has a different and significantly more adult story line. I would say that this series is better than its parent, but Buffy is mandatory and still enjoyable viewing to get to this one.

Mandatory viewing.

I'd need to re-watch this to add proper notes.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer - (1997 show) image

Entertainment > Television >

(on Wikipedia)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118276/

A highschool cheerleader, learning she is imbued with the spirit of the Vampire Slayer and her school was built on a Hellmouth, is trained by an ancient order of Watchers to fight vampires and other monsters from ending the world.

An astonishing series, and I don't say that lightly. The characters and story are outstanding. While this is a fast-and-loose show, it matures. It spinoff/partner series, Angel - (1999 show) is even more adult. This show is well worth the time, even if its initial episodes put the viewer off with its childishness. It's not a series that "grows on you", it really does get better and better, building upon and maturing out of its initial impressions.

Mandatory viewing.
