Robot Carnival - (1987 movie) image

A series of unrelated voiceless-shorts, sort of sometimes stitched together with the theme of robots.

Fairly terrible. It comes across as a set of student efforts. I wouldn't have been impressed even then.

On the way to moving to a new town, a girl stumbles upon and is trapped in a pocket dimension with an old Japanese bath house run by spirits and non-humans.

SHE SHOUTS A LOT

A spectacular movie. Youthful but with a balance of fantasy spectacle and horror.

In a world where video game characters are alive, a lonely bad guy tries to earn appreciation but ends up threatens ruin.

A fun movie, most appropriate for the nostalgia fans of various old arcade games. It goes very very old, like Pixels - (2015 movie), which puts it in a particularly odd space. I think this one ends up being childish and unique enough that its various reference aren't in the way of an actual proper movie.

A spy does spy stuff, drinks, hits on women and makes a jackass of himself while being surprisingly competent.

A fun, light, series which has a whole lot of laugh-out-loud moments.

  • Though I've seen it all, I didn't begin taking notes until later on.

The Transformers - The Movie (1986) poster

To solidify its power, a planet-eater tracks down the only thing which could threaten it, the "matrix of power", a device passed down from the leaders of a race of alien robots.

This was a deeply-moving movie for me as a child, though this impression was only possible because I grew up watching the original series. Re-watching this as an adult, it didn't have anywhere near that impact.

Though I do still like it, I don't know that I can recommend it, not just because it looks "old", but because it requires so much context from the series. I think for the young these days this would look like a crappy old cartoon with decent, but old, rock music.

Roughnecks - Starship Troopers Chronicles (1999-2000) dvd

(archive of the original website)

A military unit is sent on missions in a future where all of humanity is at war with alien insects.

The show is animated, and not "anime". As such, it has not held up well with time. The music is fantastic, though. Truly. However, its other high points do not make up for the visual issue I have.

While it doesn't do it for me, I would recommend this for fans of the movie or movie series who can also handle the visual style and jerky movement that to me is reminiscent of ReBoot (1994-09-10 to 2001-11-30 television show).

  • Properly titled Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles
  • Ran from 1999-08-30 to 2000-04-03
  • Based on the book.
  • Based the movie Starship Troopers - (1997 movie), and is definitely not a sequel to it.

Heavy Metal (1981) image

A girl kills her father, blows up her house to hide the evidence and flees the scene.

While this might have been good at the time, and particularly notable because of the nudity, it's only vaguely entertaining like a sort of late-night TV-movie. It's too low-brow compared to science fiction movies, too adult compared to fantasy movies and too childish for grownups.

In a future Tokyo which has survived a massive explosion, a highschool student motorcycle gang stumbles into a military research program whose earlier efforts lead to that disaster, and they become embroiled in the revived project.

A genre-defining movie on so many levels. It portrays a world unique to those unfamiliar with manga (a form of Japanese comics) and has both great storytelling and incredible animation.
