A genius-recluse works on artificial intelligence, and brings in a young man to test his most recent success.

I don’t know what it says about me, but I find this movie innocent, beautiful, and deeply disturbing. I honestly don’t think it would be moral of me to recommend this to anyone except as a sort of cautionary tale of the inevitable.

Of Silence (2014) poster

A story about a man being a man.

A man, like all men, must “man up” instead of showing weakness. Not allowed to talk about his feelings, or ask for help, he is never diagnosed with mental disorders. When his wife dies, he is never offered and can’t seek counselling. When he spirals into depression he cannot talk about it or seek help. When his disorders flare up, he again cannot ask for help. His bills unpaid, he’s still required to suffer quietly until he is driven to suicide or is thrown into the streets. He can’t even talk to his family. He is a man who must be a man.

A movie with no characters, no plot and no purpose. Though I wonder if it intended it, this movie supremely highlights the silent suffering men live with.

A mockumentary about four vampire flatmates in New Zealand.

Bad. This is supposed to be comedy. I’m not laughing. From what little I saw, I doubt it will get any better.

An explorer ship bumps into aliens.

AVOID AVOID AVOID.

Do not watch this, especially if you are a fan of the alien movie franchise.

The survivors of an alien attack struggle to stay alive aboard their research vessel, and learn its true purpose.

Perhaps because Alien 3 – (1992 movie) wasn’t as amazing as the first two, Alien: Resurrection wasn’t that impactful. I think it was a cop-out of an odd reboot.

  • Properly titled Alien: Resurrection

Two orphans become witch hunters.

This is not horror. It’s kindof a light action film. Quite good.

The style is medieval-meets-western. I’ve seen other movies which do this, and I like it quite a lot.

Unnecessarily foul language. It’s jarring.

Great effects, camera work and general atmosphere.

A military science experiment haunts local Yugoslavians when the infected turn into madmen.

An amateurish zombie movie with nothing interesting to add to the genre. It’s worth a watch if you’re zombie movies, otherwise don’t bother.

Naked Lunch (1991) poster

A struggling writer takes drugs, giving him incredible results with unforeseen consequences.

This is an uncomfortably-great movie. It’s semi-horror in the sense of a tactile empathy the viewer has. I don’t know that I’d consider this mandatory viewing, because it would strongly depend on the viewer. I don’t think this would be a “love it or hate it” movie, because it’s .. just odd. It’s original, and that alone would make it mandatory viewing for some.

A man escapes death by teleporting himself to an extremely-distant planet, whose residents went mad from an unknown plague.

Really great for what it is, but its genre is not my cup of tea.
