Inspired by the story of the forty-seven rōnin. If you don't know it, then don't look that up. I can't give a description without spoiling it. Consider yourself lucky to have a fresh mind.

This is a patient yet tense movie. I have next to no notes, because there's really nothing to write or even think about. Recommended, though not "highly recommended", as there are a lot of movies which execute this general manly-man theme extremely well. Though it's not among its number, anyone who likes the samurai genre should give this a watch.

An asshole anchorman is sent to a little town to do a fluff story on Groundhog Day, but karma bites him in the ass when the town gets snowed-in.

A fantastic movie not just for the usual things, but for the execution of its idea. Unlike so many movies that have its elements, this one stays grounded and accessible. This movie is well-loved and highly recommended.

A coming of age story of a class of students learning poetry in an unorthodox way.

While I recommend and like this, it not great.

Something about it makes it feel somehow inelegant or simple, perhaps even predictable. Perhaps it stood out in its era, and it caught me at an impressionable moment for my first viewing, but as I watch it again it doesn't grab me much at all. I think this would be weakly-mandatory for creating a well-rounded movie-learning experience in someone young.

A stupid and deaf guy does stupid things while being deaf.

This was listed as a thriller and isn't even remotely thrilling. It is slow and depressing throughout. I got well past an hour without being thrilled.

Single people are in a hotel and must fall in love, and they hunt other people for sport to gain extra days to do it.

This is just a shit movie. The little twangs of music are unnecessarily unnerving, the narration is pointless and fucking annoying and everyone's manner of speech is .. well it grates on my nerves.

Arabian Nights (1942) poster

A king's brother takes the throne, assuming his brother is assassinated, but that brother works to regain power.

An obvious storyline, with all the cheese of old movies. I'm sure this is fantabulous and all that, but it is dry intellectual-bubblegum, with corny comedy so bad it distracts from any chance of appreciation I might have of it.

I don't know that this was inspired by a story in One Thousand and One Nights - (book), by various
