Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989) poster

Two dumbass kids are given a time machine to help with their oral report for history class.

These were simple times, where a movie’s comedy was as light as the effort to make it. A straightforward no-thought movie, perfect for getting drunk and talking funny. Though I recommend it, I fear it is drifting away from its original target ages and may only be good for people old enough to have already seen this.

Arabian Nights (1942) poster

A king’s brother takes the throne, assuming his brother is assassinated, but that brother works to regain power.

An obvious storyline, with all the cheese of old movies. I’m sure this is fantabulous and all that, but it is dry intellectual-bubblegum, with corny comedy so bad it distracts from any chance of appreciation I might have of it.

I don’t know that this was inspired by a story in One Thousand and One Nights – (book), by various

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - Sword of Destiny (2016) poster

Something about a sword that’s a greenish, and some people who fight and think fighting is cool because of honour and all that.

I also think there’s a Princess Leia/Luke Skywalker thing happening, but I was too distracted by the terrible mixing of accents.

Like superhero movies, this genre has completely worn out its welcome. I’m no longer interested in the same old shit, and even the attempts at story telling have become bland to me. Its scenery and music have become samey and aren’t going to make up for the lack of captivating characters and a solid story. Overused wire-jumps are not exciting. And stop with that screeching sound when swords are un/sheathed.

Terminus (2015) poster

Meteors fall to earth, one of which survives and is seen to house a living creature by a local yokel.

Meh. For science fiction it’s barely okay, and as an actual movie it’s less than that. Good enough to recommend to bored half-fans of science fiction who want less science and more fiction.

Who Am I - Kein System ist sicher (2014) poster

A young, broken, man, enters an underground community of computer crackers, trying desperately to prove himself but with consequences.

An extremely good movie. While not quite mandatory, it’s definitely a proper advancement of the “hacker kid” movies that have sullied past movies. Highly recommended, even for people that “know their stuff”, as it doesn’t lay on the techno-babble which describes everything painfully wrong. Instead, it takes a reasonable middle ground, staying away from pop culture and fairly-firmly on the social side of storytelling.

The Crown and the Dragon (2013) poster

Entertainment > Movies >

Something about a coronation, a dragon, a prophesy, a paladin and probably some other stuff.

A solid story, executed well, but something about it seems off to me. Perhaps it’s a budget issue. I’d bet the high-budget films have spoiled things for the others. Recommended (only) for fantasy fiction enthusiasts.

  • Properly titled The Crown and the Dragon – The Paladin Cycle

Gods of Egypt (2016) poster

The gods fuck around and threaten all mortals, but it’s up to one mortal to help a downtrodden god to be a not-downtrodden god and save the day.

The day is saved. Entertainment was had. Possibly worth a watch, but I think it’s fluff even for for movies like this one.

A physicist works in secret to build a wormhole generator, but its failure leads to surprising consequences.

While I don’t regret watching this, it’s only fair at best in my mind. While it does get tangled up in some of the more interesting themes of time travel fiction, it dances around things and is generally too fluffy for me to keep the tough stuff in my mind.

Some Japanese guys are in a prison.

I have no idea what’s going on with this, but after nearly a half an hour I’m just going to give up.
