The Art of War cover

(on Wikipedia)

A military treatise summing up the military experiences prior to and during the mid-Warring States period (475 BC - 221 BC).

Two editions of translations were released, and this publication includes everything:

  1. The 15 chapters of part 1 released in 1985
  2. The additional chapter released in 1985
  3. The 15 chapters from 1975's Part II, which were excised for that 1985 edition.

If this is what I think it is, then I first read this as The Second Art of War and found it a much better read than its predecessor. I was never able to find a book with that title.

  • aka Sun Bin: The Art of War
  • This is a two-book hardcover which also has the original/earlier The Art of War - (~476 BC book), by Sunzi
  • Published 2000-01-01
  • ISBN-10 7119024124
  • ISBN-13 978-7119024127
  • Note: I've read the author died in 310 BC, and I haven't seen a more accurate date for this book.

    • p.21 - Sunzi and Sun Bin lived more than 160 years apart.
  • Sun Bin (孫臏 · 孙膑)

    • Historians came to call him "Qi Sunzi" (Master Sun of Qi).

A military treatise from Ancient China's late Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 B.C.).

Like The Prince - (1910 book), by Niccolò Machiavelli, people have interpreted this text for all manner of uses such as the business world.

This is a dual language (Chinese-English) hardcover edition which was translated in China itself, as opposed to being one of the various foreign-made translations.

Ten Years - (2015 movie) image

A criminal syndicate works toward panic to implement legal changes.

It was slow, awkward and amateur.. and I watched the first part and stopped watching after just 20 minutes.

  • aka Sap Nin

Robotrix - (1991 movie) image

An evil scientist constructs a robot surrogate and transfers his consciousness into it to carry out his plans for global domination by kidnapping a very wealthy sheikh's son.

A watchable moderate-budget movie which somehow still falls into an 80s-cheese style. It's rare to find such a bold movie, even with it being unashamedly graphic to the point of dark comedy. I think that's why I like it.

It's worth watching once.

Fist of Legend - (1994 movie) image

Upon hearing of his master's death, a man returns to Shanghai amidst tensions from its Japanese occupation, and learns there was foul play.

Quite a good movie, with all the basic elements. There's next to none of the B-movie cheese that's pervasive of such films, so it's good enough for everyday people.

The Mummy - Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008) poster

Seeking ancient Egyptian treasure Chinese artifacts, archaeologists unleash a curse that threatens the world. Only this time it's about an ancient warlord's cursed terracotta army.

Decently follows in the footsteps of the previous two movies, though replacing Rachel Weisz with Maria Bello is a terrible distraction. Anyone who likes the other two movies ought to like this one reasonably well. I think this is worth watching once or twice, but certainly hasn't enough soul for collection like the first movie.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - Sword of Destiny (2016) poster

Something about a sword that's a greenish, and some people who fight and think fighting is cool because of honour and all that.

I also think there's a Princess Leia/Luke Skywalker thing happening, but I was too distracted by the terrible mixing of accents.

Like superhero movies, this genre has completely worn out its welcome. I'm no longer interested in the same old shit, and even the attempts at story telling have become bland to me. Its scenery and music have become samey and aren't going to make up for the lack of captivating characters and a solid story. Overused wire-jumps are not exciting. And stop with that screeching sound when swords are un/sheathed.

Monkey King - Hero Is Back (2015) poster 12

Something about trolls and such, and a little boy who probably becomes a hero.

I didn't get very far into this. It's way too over-the-top childish for my tastes. I would recommend this be watched by a parent with their kid. It seems action-packed yet "safe". Nobody dies, even through major fight scenes.

  • Properly titled Monkey King: Hero Is Back (2015)
  • 西游记之大圣归来 or Xi you ji zhi da sheng gui lai in Chinese
  • You may think that "is back" would mean this is a sequel. It is not.

Reading and Writing Chinese - Third Edition

Highly recommended - Mnemonics, multiple pictures for stroke order and details for each character's difficulty level give this book a completely different approach from the others I own.

Feel free to change the Amazon.com URL from .com to your language of choice. Odds are good that it'll be available from another amazon.foo website.

Highly recommended - A stark contrast to the traditional dictionary. Far more visual and friendly. Absolutely not a replacement for an actual dictionary.
