Receiving a signal from her now-dead foster-parent race, Samus Aran investigates.

There is no plot. It’s confusing and ugly. Do not watch this.

Babylon 5 - (1994 show) 01

Upon contact with aliens, humans set up a space station to promote ambassadorial relations among species.

Easily among the best television I’ve seen. Everything about this series is phenomenal: acting, stories, sets, etc. Unfortunately, the graphics do appear dated in places, but it otherwise holds up very well.

Mandatory viewing.

Babylon 5 – (1994 show) >

The feature-length movie and test pilot for Babylon 5 – (1994 show).

This is the first item to view in the Babylon 5 viewing order. See Babylon 5 binge 01 notes.

  • Properly titled Babylon 5: The Gathering
  • This is technically “film 0”, as it is the feature-length pilot episode.
  • Movie Box, cd 1 – Babylon 5 – The Gathering – (1993 movie)

    • The first disk, which is labeled “1”. It is extremely important to get this right! Look at the number and title on the disk.
  • SPOILER ALERT – Although there is important information in the introduction to the station, I think it’s important to skip to 1:15.

Police Academy (1984) poster

The bar for entry into the police force is lowered, and misfits enter the police academy.

Overall, this was worth a couple of laughs, but the sexism and racism need to be viewed too in-context for me to deal with it. This language/culture/whatever difference removes any chance of timelessness this movie might have had.

  • The Police Academy (franchise):

    • Police Academy 2 – Their First Assignment
    • Police Academy 3 – Back in Training
    • Police Academy 4 – Citizens on Patrol
    • Police Academy 5 – Assignment Miami Beach
    • Police Academy 6 – City Under Siege
    • Police Academy 7 – Mission to Moscow

Spaceballs (1987) poster

Primarily a parody the original Star Wars trilogy.

It technically holds up well, but there are references which wouldn’t make sense to a younger person. Bits and pieces feel old, but a surprising amount of it doesn’t. All in all, I can see why it was a cult classic, but it’s almost entirely boring to me. 1980s comedy has a specific flavour which is really simplistic and underwhelming out of context.

Recommended as a one-off watch for those who have seen and appreciated other bubblegum 1980s comedies. Otherwise, pass on this.

Red Dawn (1984) poster

The Soviets and Cubans invade the United States, and a small band fight to survive.

It’s important to understand this movie in the context of the Cold War. As such, this movie doesn’t exactly stand the test of time in this respect. The 2012 remake had to blame North Korea because our times are different. Back then, this movie had a believable-enough plot line.

The underlying ideas are good, but the actual plot and movie itself do feel old. I like this movie a lot, but only for its concepts. I don’t think it’s re-watchable for a non-survivalist.

Earthrise (2014) poster

Entertainment > Movies >

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3743362/

People abandon Earth to flee to Mars, and a ship of three are sent with supplies to aid in recolonization.

I couldn’t get 20 minutes in because of the acting.

2015-11-02

  • Oh the teeth on that woman (Dawn).
  • “Lab apple” wouldn’t be much of a concept for people born 330 years after Mars colonization.
  • How come Dawn and dude could be arguing and other woman wouldn’t come in then, but came in when she hallucinated.
  • The acting seems sub-par to me.
  • Oh gods the flashback type stuff annoys me.
  • With three people, this is pretty bland.
  • Hmm, waiting until 30, that sounds a lot like other population or resource-constraint movies that send people away.
  • Just how big is the ship? For three people, she sure has a lot of space.
  • Why would a few days be fucking people over like that? I bet it’s because they’re 30.

Okay, I’m going to stop now.. the acting is just too bad.

Mannequin (1987) poster

A failure artist finds new muse when his prize mannequin creation comes to life.

A fun and imaginative movie. Easy on the brain. It’s accessible to people who don’t like or want to see a “heavy” romance movie.

The Last Witch Hunter (2015) 1

The dying breath of the queen of witches curses a man with immortality, who becomes a witch hunter but only one who incarcerates witches, which turns out to be a bad idea because they didn’t see Demolition Man – (1993 movie).

An adequate movie, but doesn’t bring anything interesting. The world, the plot and the characters are all boring. Perfectly fine for people who like bubblegum action fantasy.
