Exploring a mix of ideas, and waffling on a bunch. Maybe I'll come back and edit a bit every so often.
Problem: Given an item in the Internet Archive, e.g. The works of Ralph Waldo Emerson, you may be tempted to download the PDF for its exactness. Admirable! However, my e-reader is horribly slow for opening it and turning pages. I find slow page turning aggravating; it makes me lose my train of thought and strains my reading comprehension.
This extra work is well worth it for me.
See also PDF? I haven't tested it, but I wonder if "repairing" a PDF would also help with e-reader speed.
there's still more to add
I have trust issues with all storage, but flash memory-based storage is particularly unreliable.
TL;DR - Stubby metal drives are a problem.

There are a lot of people who have been key, at least in hindsight, to my development.
I haven't really thought about populating this topic, but at a glance..
It can also be called something like "contemplation" or mental relaxation.
However, I don't meditate. I appear to have created something else. Perhaps "Focus" is a better word. I will consider this, and perhaps my notes will be moved somewhere appropriate.
Problem: A USB stick cannot boot with any of Porteus, the boot-repair LiveUSB, or SystemRescueCD. It used to be bootable with Porteus, and before that it could boot with other Linux LiveUSB distributions.
Problem: I have a messy old Windows installation, and I want to reinstall it from scratch. However, I own Windows 8, applied the Windows 8.1 upgrade, and then got the free upgrade to Windows 10. I don't have a Windows 10 installation disk.
I don't want a new disk, I want a USB stick.
I don't want Windows itself booting from a USB stick, just the installer on it.
