When a USB stick has been used for, say, a bootable Linux distribution, it usually cannot be re-used as a mass storage device by, say, Windows. These instructions are to wipe/reset a usb stick so it will work as it used to.
(This is largely untested)

Problem: On Devuan-1.0.0-jessie-i386-DVD, avconv crashes while building a video from an image and audio. It worked until a recent update.
According to old notes, 6:11.9-1~deb8u1 worked. However, I do not know if a more recent version worked before I noticed this problem.
TODO - tested and working, though my most recent Lubuntu experimentation has problems I'm still troubleshooting.
At best, my computer hangs when prompting for a password. I think this is related to the 4.4.14 kernel but have not confirmed this.

These notes were made on an everyday system with one hard drive which I completely formatted for this purpose.
This concept and these notes build a full-disk Slackware installation which also uses LVM. You can safely ignore the entire LVM post and just follow this one.

Problem: A USB stick cannot boot with any of Porteus, the boot-repair LiveUSB, or SystemRescueCD. It used to be bootable with Porteus, and before that it could boot with other Linux LiveUSB distributions.

With a default install of Lubuntu 14.04, going back to various earlier versions, I had an excellent console resolution.
Upgrading to the proprietary video drivers destroyed that feature, dropping it to.. 80x24 or so. This isn't just terrible, it's terribad on a widescreen. Because of the resolution switch, going from X windows to the console is extra-slow, which made me never want to use it.
These are some notes when I was trying to solve this problem. I eventually gave up, and just used the open source video drivers.

poweroff replaces halt for how I was using it.
I finally took some time to look into why halt wasn't powering off my computer. This was a very long-standing bug, and it was odd that something so obvious would go unfixed.
