An archival program.
A commandline file manager, with FTP access.
Particularly easy to use and featureful. I consider this an essential tool, but usually forget it exists.
An incredibly capable (and therefore very convoluted) image editor.
I use this:
- For converting
- (On Windows For editing
.pngfiles which have transparency, since
mspaint.execan't do that.
- For importing a page from a PDF, as an image.
- For transparent backgrounds
- GNU Image Manipulation Program
Often called "The Gimp".
Geany is a GTK2 (GUI) text editor which is light and featureful. Here is a sampling of features from their about page:
- Syntax highlighting
- Code folding
- Symbol name auto-completion
- Construct completion/snippets
- Auto-closing of XML and HTML tags
This is a editor that does such magical things as use control up/down to skip paragraphs. I love it for in-page bookmarking, code folding, search-replace, escaped-replaces and regular expressions for selections, documents and groups of documents.

A decent text editor which I keep forgetting I have.
Unlike Midnight Commander itself,
mceditdoesn't appear to exist under Windows.

A light and capable email client.
POP3, POP before SMTP, APOP, IMAP4rev1, IMAP over SSH, IMAP CAPABILITY, mh, SMTP, SMTP AUTH, NNTP, SSL/TLS, full OpenPGP support, external editors, filtering, muliple identities. Good multilanguage and character set support.

A free audio recording / editing suite.
Very capable, but rather confusing.

ImageMagick is a software suite to create, edit, compose, or convert bitmap images.
It's pretty fucking magickal.

The king of video players.
On Windows, this is especially-king because the user doesn't have to figure out and download various shady codecs.
- Properly titled VLC media player.
- Alternative, on Windows 10, for audio: Audacious
- VLC alternate audio track from a separate file
Can play various Oldschool music formats.
