I don’t even know how to describe this movie.

It’s only okay. It’s notable because it’s somehow rated PG but is so utterly completely unsuitable to that rating; legendary.

A man is robbed and unintentionally killed on the way home from the theater, and his ghost trains to become an avenger for justice.

This is somehow not an alternate Batman origin story. Although it’s intentionally slow-paced in a lot of places to draw out the emotion, it is quite nice; recommended.

The Neverending Story

A boy skips school, is assaulted by bullies then hides from them in a bookstore which he robs, then hides out in his school’s attic to read.

An extraordinarily powerful movie.

There’s a certain feeling with movies in the 1980’s which were positioned for children but had unashamedly-adult themes running through them. The Neverending Story has, at its core, themes of literacy, imagination, will, loss, hope and determination.

A twelve year old kid is kidnapped by an alien research drone, who experiments on him by stuffing him full of knowledge, and although his brain ends up “leaking”, he is the drone’s only chance to get back home after hitting some power lines and getting shocked.

Though there aren’t many kid-friendly science fiction movies out there, this is easily the best among them. Even ignoring its “present day” time, it’s beginning to show its age. The fact that its “present day” is 1986 will inevitably be its biggest hurdle to accessibility to today’s young. This movie is definitely worth a remake every fifteen years or less.

The Princess Bride - (1987 movie) image

Soon to enter into a loveless marriage with the king, a common woman’s only hope lies in a daring rescue attempt.

A classic movie of fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love and miracles. This is a kid-friendly movie in the sense that the 80s didn’t have kids who were complete pussies. There is hatred, danger, death and blood, and yes proper torture, and this is a fine family-friendly film.

The only flaw in this movie is the grandfather-narrator, who is terribly overdone to the point of distraction.
