A man is sent into deep space with an artificial intelligence to help with his sanity.

It’s moody and has lots of feelings, sex, and bright lights.

An alternate Earth is discovered somehow, and for unknown reasons the mission to explore it comes back to a ruined Earth.

The writing is just terrible; I don’t know what the fuck they were thinking with the plot or the world-building.

A sample from Mars comes out of hibernation.

If you end the movie at the correct point, then it’s a fine movie. Otherwise it’s shit.

The Ice Pirates - (1984 movie) poster

In the far future, the scarcity of water prompts pirates to steal ice, but they are swept up into a rebellion.

Swashbuckling-and-blasters, this movie is cheezy without being funny. I think it has some cult following merely because there wasn’t much of interest back then, and this style of movie was popular for reasons outside of quality entertainment. This is like some sort of movie version of shitposting.

Absolutely not recommended, as it doesn’t tick any boxes outside of nostalgia.

A guy who builds the technology to turn dirt into water goes to Mars, and even though he knows the ship better than anyone else, somehow, he has trouble on the way.

A patient, somewhat interesting movie. Worth watching if you’re into such things, but definitely not if you’re new to this style.

I watched the whole thing, and don’t really regret it, but I wouldn’t categorize this as anywhere near awesome.

Babylon 5 - (1994 show) 01

Upon contact with aliens, humans set up a space station to promote ambassadorial relations among species.

Easily among the best television I’ve seen. Everything about this series is phenomenal: acting, stories, sets, etc. Unfortunately, the graphics do appear dated in places, but it otherwise holds up very well.

Mandatory viewing.

The feature-length movie and test pilot for Babylon 5 – (1994 show).

This is the first item to view in the Babylon 5 viewing order. See Babylon 5 binge 01 notes.

  • Properly titled Babylon 5: The Gathering
  • This is technically “film 0”, as it is the feature-length pilot episode.
  • Movie Box, cd 1 – Babylon 5 – The Gathering – (1993 movie)

    • The first disk, which is labeled “1”. It is extremely important to get this right! Look at the number and title on the disk.
  • SPOILER ALERT – Although there is important information in the introduction to the station, I think it’s important to skip to 1:15.

Spaceballs (1987) poster

Primarily a parody the original Star Wars trilogy.

It technically holds up well, but there are references which wouldn’t make sense to a younger person. Bits and pieces feel old, but a surprising amount of it doesn’t. All in all, I can see why it was a cult classic, but it’s almost entirely boring to me. 1980s comedy has a specific flavour which is really simplistic and underwhelming out of context.

Recommended as a one-off watch for those who have seen and appreciated other bubblegum 1980s comedies. Otherwise, pass on this.
