The Last Lecture - (2008 book), by Randy Pausch cover

A dying guy writes about how awesome he had it, and gives advice to his children.

It takes almost half of the book to mine more than two interesting points. It is a glaring reminder of how important it is to have a solid first chapter. Instead, chapter after chapter this book keeps promising something interesting, forcing the reader to cling to the “I’m dying” parts to hope for something better.

For people who stick it out, there is a lot of fluff which I was able to trivially summarize with two pages of bullet points. That’s nothing to sneeze at, so I suppose this is worth reading for some, though I won’t recommend it.

Much Ado About Nothing - (1623 play), by Shakespeare - Signet Classic image

Entertainment > Reading >

(on Wikipedia)

An man works to undermine his brother’s happiness by meddling with his son’s marriage. Also two smart people dual with words.

A pretty good book, though my reading of the Signet Classic was seriously interrupted by footnotes. Not because of the shifting up/down to read them, but because the footnotes are crammed all together. Given that this book is 1/4 commentary, axing one for clearer footnotes would have been amazing. Maybe another edition will be better. I intend to collect many of this particular play.

A cross-platform open-source animation program.

I didn’t want to deal with Blender, so I checked this out for simple animations. So far, so good. Even at a glance it could have been done far better, but maybe I can make do.

Chocolatey: babun
https://babun.github.io/

A customized Cygwin for Linux on Windows: Zsh, Bash, Git and other Linux software, all pre-configured.

Can install other software provided by Cygwin.

  • 712, 774 – apparently abandoned, last updated 2016-05-02.

    • The main contributors are still alive, I see them posting on their Twitters.
    • I’ll likely move to pure Cygwin, and get my common applications installed. That should be easy, but who the hell knows with Linux.

My configuration specific to Babun is currently scattered throughout my git repository, just findinall Babun (using my findinall() )

Plants >

An incredibly resilient fast-growing indoor/outdoor plant (vine).

I’ve seen this, or some version of this, growing perennially outside in an area with normal seasons and in moderate shade. It really covered the area nicely, and nothing else was growing there. I don’t think it was tended to at all, so it may also crowd out weeds or perhaps the area was being sprayed or weeded and I never saw it.

I’ve kept it in a basement with no real natural light around. It went dark and still thrived. It started growing itself into the wall, through paint.

Two priests, exiled to an island in the middle of nowhere in Ireland, try to make due.

A mid-1990s British comedy with a laugh track. If you aren’t positive you can handle that, then pass. It has only a few moments, but is otherwise crap.

PlayStation 2, USB >

Where:

  • You own a PlayStation 2
  • You own official PlayStation 2 discs

    • PlayStation 1 discs will also be researched.

The use cases are much the same as with DVD ripping:

  • Back discs up before disc rot sets in.
  • Rip discs and keep them safe

    • e.g. parents with little kids who damage discs.
  • Playing on a PlayStation 2 which has a broken DVD drive.

I never really got around to pursuing this as a proper project.
