A man attains mystical powers originally for selfish reasons, but they taint with a life fraught with danger and demons.

Not a bad show, but the lead character's personality isn't attracting, and there's the old celestial stick-up-the-ass personality in another. The lead female is hot. Hotty hot hot.

This was cancelled after one season. Back in the 90s this show would have done well, but I'm guessing this genre has alternately been well-poisoned or saturated. This show has too much it has to be better than to catch enough attention to survive. I think that it's magic-fantasy was competing with an extraordinarily-strong superhero-fantasy genre.

A man stares into the sun as a child, and develops superhuman powers of math, pattern recognition with a side order of paranoia etc.

I don't think this will appeal to most people, since it deal with topics only the fringe of humanity have any comprehension of. I happen to like it quite a bit, for reasons I certainly never hinted at in the previous sentence.

A struggling writer takes drugs, giving him incredible results with unforeseen consequences.

This is an uncomfortably-great movie. It's semi-horror in the sense of a tactile empathy the viewer has. I don't know that I'd consider this mandatory viewing, because it would strongly depend on the viewer. I don't think this would be a "love it or hate it" movie, because it's .. just odd. It's original, and that alone would make it mandatory viewing for some.

They Live (1988) poster

A down-and-out traveler discovers a pair of sunglasses which let him see through the illusions aliens have been using to control mankind.

With overtones of the manipulation of the everyman, I would easily put this movie in the same class as Nineteen Eighty-Four. However, the otherwise weighty impact is cushioned by comedy, great characters and a great story. Though old, this movie stands the test of time. Easily considered satirical-horror, there's much more to it.

This is, in a sense, a bubblegum movie that delivers a subtler message. It tickles the viewer's cognitive dissonance. Some viewers will easily "get it", and some will merely find it entertaining. I hope those between those two groups will be particularly intrigued.

Mandatory viewing.

A drug reveals an alien world.

I've heard it described as The Evil Dead - (1981 movie) meets Naked Lunch - (1991 movie). I think it also has a bit of the spirit of They Live - (1988 movie). If you know and liked those films, you'll like this one.

A must-watch.

A hacker learns reality is not as it appears.

A sci-fi ripoff of elements of Lucid dreaming, with elements taken from the Neuromancer/Shadowrun "cyberpunk" genres.

A pioneering movie for special effects, which have held up quite well, and its general pot and atmosphere. Technically not original for science fiction fans, but great nonetheless.

One of my favourites, although I really wish the actor playing Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) was good looking.

  1. The Matrix - (1999 movie)
  2. The Matrix Reloaded - (2003 movie)
  3. The Matrix Revolutions - (2003 movie)

A series of non-cannon short animated films inspired by The Matrix - (1999 movie).

Better than the main series in some cases. I rather love every one of these short films.
