Twenty years after the near-annihilation of Earth, aliens return.

Not a particularly good movie. Definitely not worth a watch for science fiction movie fans. I don't know who the target audience is supposed to be. There's no character development, poor drama, uninspired action, un-notable writing.. so un-notable that I made a word up. Screw you, red squiggle.. I defy you.

Roughnecks - Starship Troopers Chronicles (1999-2000) dvd

(archive of the original website)

A military unit is sent on missions in a future where all of humanity is at war with alien insects.

The show is animated, and not "anime". As such, it has not held up well with time. The music is fantastic, though. Truly. However, its other high points do not make up for the visual issue I have.

While it doesn't do it for me, I would recommend this for fans of the movie or movie series who can also handle the visual style and jerky movement that to me is reminiscent of ReBoot (1994-09-10 to 2001-11-30 television show).

  • Properly titled Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles
  • Ran from 1999-08-30 to 2000-04-03
  • Based on the book.
  • Based the movie Starship Troopers - (1997 movie), and is definitely not a sequel to it.

The war with the bugs rages on, with humanity starting to lose, but something about god and wining and things.

This started off as a great or at lease decent tv-movie, but its "wrap up" took enough of a nosedive to spoil it. It has a much higher budget and is generally better than part two, but.. that ending, man. That ending. This is still worth a once-watch for fans of the original.

Soldiers flee an unwinnable battle, but find themselves trapped in a bunker surrounded by an enemy desperate to get in.

Recommended for fans of the original who can tolerate less character development, story and budget. It's definitely not bad.

Aliens are sending spores to colonize Earth, but when humans send a retaliatory force to their homeworld they learn the bugs are a far more dangerous foe than anticipated.

It's a largely flawless movie. Amazing fun for what it is, which is the sort of military movie where only one soldier runs out of ammo once in the entire movie.

Explore, survive, gather and trade while making your way to the galactic core.

Every single described goal of this game has failed. It is a bad flight-simulator, with bad crafting, bad technology, and bad survival mechanics. It is set on procedurally generated planets so vast that nothing matters, in a procedurally-generated universe so vast that nothing matters. What's worse is that it is so godawfully crowded with hand-holding that it becomes both easy and repetitive. Being ugly and with abysmal performance, it's not even an exploration time-waster.

Perhaps in some years they will change/fix many of its issues, but I believe it has a fundamental casualness to it that anchors its core gameplay problems. This is not a game made for gamers.

2017-05-07 update: I tried it again, and it just isn't worth it. If its graphics were the same as before (they're busted now) then maybe. I have another video card but I'm not going to swap things around or fiddle with installing an old version of my card's drivers. I just don't want to bother any more.

Absolutely Anything (2015) post

To judge the Earth, aliens grant a single man the power of wishing, but he's an everyday guy and has no idea how to handle it.

A moderately good movie, with solid comedy throughout it. I only really care about it because of its subject matter and the way it handles it. Strangely, he grants himself wisdom early on but never clues into using it to give him proper understanding of it and how to use it. That's the major theme of the movie, and the source of its comedy.

Having been caught uncovering government secrets, an eight-year-old goes on the run.

While good, it's a sort of non-movie. It's hollow and without real substance or resolution.

Some of it reminds me of Escape from Witch Mountain.

An alien invasion begins with horrifying disasters but peters out into a lengthy siege wherein an unlikely girl struggles to survive.

See Falling Skies (2011-06-19 - 2015-08-30). No really, just go see that. It's not that great either, though.

Flight of the Navigator (1986) poster

A twelve year old kid is kidnapped by an alien research drone, who experiments on him by stuffing him full of knowledge, and although his brain ends up "leaking", he is the drone's only chance to get back home after hitting some power lines and getting shocked.

Though there aren't many kid-friendly science fiction movies out there, this is easily the best among them. Even ignoring its "present day" time, it's beginning to show its age. The fact that its "present day" is 1986 will inevitably be its biggest hurdle to accessibility to today's young. This movie is definitely worth a remake every fifteen years or less.
