A filesystem I use because of checksumming and de-duplication.

Very good, although I’ve had a sketchy history with it. I’ve used multiple versions of it, sometimes mounting the same partition with different versions of it.

I stopped using it because I lost trust in its reliability.

A Windows 8.1 reinstall, made necessary by a combination of electrical, hardware and software issues, overwrote my boot loader.

All of my bootable USB sticks were old or odd. I could also not manage to get any USB liveUSB sticks made under Windows. fml, amirite?

I used to have a relatively updated Lubuntu. It was a rolling upgrade from some earlier version. I completely screwed up backup restoration and decided to overwrite the install with Lubuntu 14.04. I then noticed some odd issues.

When I first got into Path of Exile – (2013 game), I did not use Windows (at the time I had access to Windows XP).

Using Wine was a significant project. Others had, even during my months of experimentation, reported they had things running just fine. I did have it running fairly well, but not well enough for me at the time. This ultimately lead to my abandoning using Wine at my earliest opportunity. I might have tried PlayOnLinux or codeweavers, and I might have even paid for it, but using Windows was easy enough once I dual-booted into it.

Unity Linux had been having some serious package issues, before their switch to the Mandriva repositories, and I wanted to explore other distributions.

My goals were pretty simple, I thought..

  • World of Warcraft under Wine

    • With full capability like what I had originally done with Ubuntu and is just “done right” under Unity Linux.
    • Including graphics acceleration with no fuss.
  • An everyday suite of software, like Firefox, Claws Mail, Geany, Transmission, all installed via a package manager.
  • Mumble as my new chat client for future Ruby mentoring.
  • Mangler (Ventrilo Clone)
  • A “light” distribution.

update 2 – this is basically pointless with contemporary hardware and software. Just use the defaults for something like cgdisk or GParted:

https://gparted.org/display-doc.php?name=help-manual#gparted-specify-partition-alignment

Use MiB alignment for modern operating systems.

The Cylinder/Head/Sector values reported by modern disk devices no longer have a direct physical relationship to the data stored on the disk device. Hence it is no longer valid to use this alignment setting to achieve enhanced performance.

update: cgdisk, when beginning with a new partition table, when creating the first partition, automatically creates a small empty partition before it, and thus is said to align everything properly. I haven’t double-checked this.

I was getting frustrated with Unity Linux (I can’t update or my audio will break, fuck PulseAudio) and I wanted to experiment with a bunch of other Linux distributions. Every time I do something like this I get burned time and time again either by obvious bugs or random incompatibility.

The main drive was for the ruby mentoring project. A multimedia toolkit was selected which I couldn’t get working under Unity Linux.

So I wanted to get City of Heroes – (2004 game) installed to try it out. I’ve been bored of World of Warcraft for the longest time, and a superhero-based game has been sounding like fun for some time now.

At this point neither Diablo 3 – (2012 game) nor Star Wars: The Old Republic were out. I just needed something to do.

But for some odd reason I could not get City of Heroes to work. It was definitely a DirectX issue, except DirectX refused to install! Hopefully someone out there can benefit from the hell I went through, and my notes would be useful..
