Explore, survive, gather and trade while making your way to the galactic core.

Every single described goal of this game has failed. It is a bad flight-simulator, with bad crafting, bad technology, and bad survival mechanics. It is set on procedurally generated planets so vast that nothing matters, in a procedurally-generated universe so vast that nothing matters. What’s worse is that it is so godawfully crowded with hand-holding that it becomes both easy and repetitive. Being ugly and with abysmal performance, it’s not even an exploration time-waster.

Perhaps in some years they will change/fix many of its issues, but I believe it has a fundamental casualness to it that anchors its core gameplay problems. This is not a game made for gamers.

2017-05-07 update: I tried it again, and it just isn’t worth it. If its graphics were the same as before (they’re busted now) then maybe. I have another video card but I’m not going to swap things around or fiddle with installing an old version of my card’s drivers. I just don’t want to bother any more.

Shoot stuff and things.

I played the open beta. I found it fun, but not worth money. When I was given it for free a while later, I didn’t find it all that great.

  • Has graphics reminiscent of Sanctum 2 – (2013 game).
  • Overwatch 2 – While it has PvE to some degree, the full talent trees and upgrades concept will not be implemented. (source)

Yet another VoIP client.

A clumsy “pretends to be pretty” interface, but it seems reasonable enough. Definitely not better than Mumble for the basics.

It might be better-suited for large groups, or because it has a free server, or some other thing I haven’t discovered. I’ll keep it in my toolbox, but I don’t really like it.

A tool for booting multiple distributions from a USB stick. Duh.

Very easy to use. Works under Windows. Does not work under Linux.

Open-world exploration.

It’s like an even crappier-graphics Minecraft, only with nothing to do. At first I thought it was quirky and interesting, but for some reason I got lifted in the air and after a long, long, while the game ended. I redid things, and this happened the second time too.

TheGun icon

A notepad.exe replacement in 6,144 bytes.

Particularly notable because its configuration is done through an external program which directly modifies the THEGUN.EXE binary.

I tossed this in with my portable applications. It’s tiny, and I figure it’s one of those “just in case” sort of applications.

A malware scanner.

Mostly-meh.

  • Their portable scanner is still just an installer.
  • It found an Wajam plugin from Magic Camera, presumably installed for either Internet Explorer or Edge.

    • During scanning, it claims to have found infected files, but those files were neither reported at the end of its scan nor found in its quarantine. What gives?
